Creation

Genesis 1

Thesis: God created all things in six 24-hour days

Introduction

2 Key Aspects about God’s creation - Days and Kinds

Days (1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31; 2:1-3)

What would you define as a day?
One day is a period of measurement defining the amount of time it takes for the earth to make one full rotation - a 24-hour period of time
Who wrote Genesis?
Moses - he wrote the whole Law
Remind me of some of the theories of creation you guys talked about last week?
Gap Theory
Day-Age Theory
Framework Hypothesis
Theistic Evolution
How can we determine what is meant by the word yom (day) in Genesis 1?
yom - 24-hour day; an undisclosed period of time
Context determines its meaning
Also think about what the reader would understand a day to be - culture (culture does not determine the meaning of Scripture, but it can help us determine what it means by looking at what culture may understand certain words and phrases to mean)
What are some key words you see when it talks about “day”?
Evening and morning
What do we understand a day to be?
24-hour period of time is takes for the earth to make one full rotation
Why would Moses mean something different? Context of this passage speaks of “evening and morning”
This is key to understanding the meaning of yom
Day-Age Theory - tries to make yom take on its other meaning, an undisclosed period of time
Why can’t it mean that?
Context and understanding
2 Peter 3:8 “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.”
Joshua 10:12–14 “Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, Until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. There was no day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.”
These verses have been used to try and defend the Day-Age Theory. They are of different contexts and of speak of different elements in regards to time
2 Pet. 3:8 speaks more of God not being bound by time, not that He does not understand it nor that He did not create it
Josh. 10 - God caused the day to stop so that Israel could fight and defeat their enemies
These are not in the same context of Gen. 1
Other theologians have understood it to mean 24-hours
Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon
The writers of the Hebrews dictionary have defined it as such…
So, how can we know that “day” means “day”?
Context, culture of the audience
Literal 24-Hour Day - the way Moses intended to write this passage and why we can understand it the way we can

Kinds (1:11, 12, 21, 24-25)

kind (min) - type, kind

a category of things distinguished by some common characteristic or quality

If a hybiscus leaf is a hybiscus leaf, what can it not be? Anything else
If you plant a apple seed, what is going to sprout? Orange tree, blueberry bush, etc.
An apple tree
In the same way, a dog won’t give birth to a cat, etc.
A human to a human (our creation is different - we are created imago dei - in the image of God [v. 26-28a])
What is evolution? Things are the way they are over millions and billions of years
Difference between Macroevolution and Microevolution (adaptation)
Macro - unobservable
Micro - observable
How does this relate to evolution?
God created all the living things according to their “kinds,” including the plants, grass, herbs, and trees. It is important to be aware that the concept of kinds refutes the process of evolution in that one plant, for instance, could never change into another plant. So, as we read Genesis 1, we must be aware that reproducing according to “kinds” is a repeated, creative directive presented by God (AIG)
Ex-nihilo
How many of you have heard this phrase? What does it mean?
Out of nothing
God created everything out of nothing
There was God and nothing else, then God created everything else
Reminder: God is supernatural so He is outside of the laws of creation therefore He did not have to be created
If God created everything this way, then that means He set the rules in place - kinds can only reproduce with their kinds and only make their kinds
Why is this important?
Colossians 1:15–17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
He is the reason we exist, we are not some cosmic fluke, rather we were created with care and with purpose…

Conclusion

What does day mean?
Literal 24-hours
How do we know?
Word meaning, context, culture, other theologians
What is kind?

a category of things distinguished by some common characteristic or quality

How do we know?
Word meaning, context, observable, God created things this way and they are governed by God’s laws of creation
