Creation:
Creation:
Introduction: “The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings. It tells us where the world came from, where sin came from, and where God’s plan of salvation began. From creation to covenant, Genesis shows us that God is in control of history and that His promises never fail. Without Genesis, we wouldn’t understand who we are, why the world is broken, or how God plans to restore it.”
a) Written by Moses
Although Genesis is technically anonymous, as the writer doesn’t identify himself in the text, the Bible assigns authorship of Genesis to Moses
Jesus refers to Moses as the book’s author (Matthew 19:4–6; Mark 12:26; Luke 16:29; John 7:22),
As does the apostle Paul (Romans 10:19; 1 Corinthians 9:9).
b) The process
We believe the Book of Genesis was compiled by eye witnesses and through the Holy it was penned by Moses
Probably the original narratives were recorded on tables of stone or clay, in common practice of early times, and then handed down from father to son,
Finally coming into the possession of Moses. Moses perhaps selected the appropriate sections for compilation, inserted his own editorial additions and comments, and provided smooth transitions from one document to the next, with the final result being the Book of Genesis as we have received it.” (Morris)
c) Two things we need to know..
Coming to the Bible knowing there is a God
We can know God exist by what we see in the world
Psalm 102:25 “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.”
The world is without excuse
2. Come to the Bible believing God has spoken perfectly to man
perfect revelation of god but does not tell us everything
2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Profitable and useful
We understand it literally according to its literaly context
Psalm 119:128 “Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things I consider to be right; I hate every false way.”
Right and true
Its not how we feel about the text, but we come to understand it right and true
Psalm 102:25 “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.”
The book of Genesis gives the foundation for the doctrines of:
· Sin, the fall, redemption, justification.
· The promise of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
· The personality and personhood of God.
· The kingdom of God.
ii. The book of Genesis shows us the origin of:
· The universe.
· Order and complexity.
· The solar system.
· The atmosphere and hydrosphere.
· Life, man, and marriage.
· Good and evil.
· Language, government, culture, nations, and religion.
1. (V1) In the the beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth
1. (V1) In the the beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth
Moses was the author of the first 5 books in the Bible
Moses wished to portray God as the founder and Creator of life
There is no convincing
This tells us that God used no pre-existing material to create the earth.
The word Genesis in Hebrew means "beginning."
a) In the beginning
The word Genesis in Hebrew means "beginning."
And so, it is "the book of the beginnings", and in Genesis we find the beginning of the universe, first of all, and then the beginning of the life forms within the universe, the beginning of man, the beginning of sin and death.
Then we find the beginning of God's redemptive program by the beginning of a nation.
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
b) Created
The ancient Hebrew word bara (created) is specific. It means to create out of nothing, showing that God created the world out of nothing, not out of Himself.
Everything God created is under His control, his creation is subject to Him
Psalm 89:11 “The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.”
Psalm 102:25 “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.”
