Stop Teaching Yourself
INTRODUCTION
ILL- Church that told me that they didn't need doctrine, just someone to help them know how to live.
Our conclusions from Scripture matter.
Good doctrine matters.- Without doctrine there is not proper action.
1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face,
2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ,
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.
5 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Multiple Teachers Assures Proper Doctrine
6 Truths About Good Doctrine
6 Truths About Good Doctrine
1. Good Doctrine Should Be Expected (1)
1. Good Doctrine Should Be Expected (1)
1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face,
Paul knew that the foundation of the church hinged on good doctrine.
Being good and moral was not enough.
He wanted them to know the Gospel.
Major verses minor.
What we believe about Christ and salvation matters.
This does not mean we should argue the minors.
23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.
24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,
25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,
2. Good Doctrine is a Product of Unity (2)
2. Good Doctrine is a Product of Unity (2)
2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ,
Paul wanted them to be be 'knit together" for the purpose of receiving understanding and knowledge of Christ.
My mom and grandmother crochet instead of knit.
When you start to crochet an afghan, you have a pattern.
It's knit together for a purpose.
Proper unity carries with it proper doctrine.
Unity is purposeless if it is hinged on poor doctrine.
Avoiding doctrine for the sake of unity builds a faulty foundation.
3. Good Doctrine Begins in Christ (3)
3. Good Doctrine Begins in Christ (3)
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
All truth is found in Christ.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
In Jesus are hidden the treasure of wisdom and knowledge.
30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.
7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
4. Good Doctrine Reveals False Teachers (4)
4. Good Doctrine Reveals False Teachers (4)
4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.
ILL- Counterfeit money- study the real in order to see the counterfeit.
18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.
We have to make sure we desire truth.
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
5. Good Doctrine Creates Proper Action (5-6)
5. Good Doctrine Creates Proper Action (5-6)
5 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Right and wrong is found in Christ. He created us and gets to make the rules.
6. Good Doctrine Provides a Foundation (7)
6. Good Doctrine Provides a Foundation (7)
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Rooted= to plant in the ground
Built Up= Ephesians 2:19-21
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
Established= stand firm on your feet, unmovable
Offense and defense of line- games are won in the trenches.
We are either established in Christ or we will be moved by every wind of doctrine.
Our salvation depends on it-
21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us,
22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Stop Establishing Yourself
Advantages of Being Established in Christ
Established= holding your ground. Football ILL
5 Provisions of Christ That Establish Us
5 Provisions of Christ That Establish Us
1. Christ Provides Freedom (8)
1. Christ Provides Freedom (8)
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Truth provides freedom
1. John 8:32
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
2. 2 Cor 3:17
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
A. Captive by Philosphy- philosophy believes that the answers are found through reason.
1. 1 Timothy 6:20
20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,”
2. Ephesians 5:6
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
B. Captive By Tradition - The teachings of the rabbi’s concerning the Law.
C. Captive By World-flesh
1. Eph 6:10-13
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
2. Christ Provides Authority (9-10)
2. Christ Provides Authority (9-10)
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Who has the right to make up the rules?
B. Christ is God in the flesh.
1. Philippians 2:5-11
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
2. All authority has been given to him.
3. He created all things, holds all things together.
4. He has the authority to provide the rules.
3. Christ Provides Power (11-12)
3. Christ Provides Power (11-12)
11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
A. Power shown through the symbol of baptism.
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
B. Symbol of Old Testament was circumcision.
C. Symbol of New spiritual sign of baptism. Spiritual not flesh. Matter of the heart.
D. We die to self in order to live in Christ’s power- Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
4. Christ Provides Life (13-14)
4. Christ Provides Life (13-14)
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
A. He cancelled the record- made record clean. We are now innocent.
B. He had authority because he paid the price.
C. Expunged - removed from public record if you stay clean and pay fines. This keeps the public from seeing the record.
1. What Christ has done for us is so much more.
2. We could not pay our spiritual fines.
2.Christ paid those for us.
5. Christ Provides Victory (15)
5. Christ Provides Victory (15)
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
A. Romans 6:12
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
B. Victory over death.
C. 1 Corinthians 15:55-58
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
1. The result of the victory is we are established- verse 58
D. Disarmed- takes away their power. ILL- Japan at end of WWII. At mercy of others for their existence. Satan is at the mercy of God for his power. Jesus has taken the right to it. One day he will return and take his place.
E. Open Shame- Visible to all they lost.
