Knowing Who We Are in Christ
Knowing Who We Are in Christ
Text: John 8:14 “Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.” (NKJV)
Introduction
Introduction
In John 8:14, Jesus stood before the religious leaders, unshaken by their accusations. They questioned His authority, doubted His words, and dismissed His testimony. Yet, Jesus spoke with unwavering assurance: “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.”
That single statement carries the weight of eternity—it reveals a Savior who knew His origin, His purpose, and His destiny. He was not confused by the noise of the crowd, the pressure of the Pharisees, or the shifting opinions of man. His identity was anchored in the Father’s truth.
Beloved, this same confidence is available to us. Too many of God’s children walk through life insecure, fearful, and unsure of who they are. The enemy whispers lies: “You’re not good enough. You’ll never measure up. God has forgotten you.” But Jesus shows us a different way—an identity rooted not in performance, possessions, or people’s opinions, but in the eternal reality of being sons and daughters of God.
Think about it: when you know where you came from—that you were born of God, washed in the blood, filled with the Spirit—and when you know where you are going—that your future is sealed in Christ and your destiny is secure—then no accusation, no trial, and no storm can shake you. You can stand, like Jesus, and say with holy confidence, “My witness is true.”
Just as a tree with deep roots cannot be toppled by the wind, the believer who knows their identity in Christ cannot be uprooted by the storms of life. The world may misunderstand you, religious voices may question you, and even your own mind may wrestle with doubt, but God’s truth declares: “You are Mine, I have called you by name, and you are My beloved.” (Isaiah 43:1).
This message today is more than knowledge—it is revelation. It is the Spirit of God reminding you: you are not lost, you are not forgotten, you are not aimless—you are chosen, redeemed, and destined with purpose.
So as we journey through these 7 Spirit-filled truths, let the love of God anchor your heart. You are about to be reminded of who you are, whose you are, and where you are going in Christ. And when you walk out of here today, you’ll walk with the same assurance Jesus had: “I know where I came from, and I know where I am going.” 🔥
Point 1 – We Are Born of God, Not of the Flesh
Point 1 – We Are Born of God, Not of the Flesh
📖 John 1:12–13 – “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God…”
📖 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
Just as Jesus knew He came from the Father, we must know our rebirth is from heaven, not from human striving.
Illustration: A child adopted into a new family doesn’t live like an orphan anymore. They inherit a new name and home. In Christ, we’ve been adopted into God’s family.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: Your past does not define you. Your spiritual birth certificate is signed in the blood of Jesus.
Point 2 – We Are Seated with Christ in Heavenly Places
Point 2 – We Are Seated with Christ in Heavenly Places
📖 Ephesians 2:6 – “And raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Knowing where we are spiritually located gives us authority over fear, sin, and the devil.
Real-Life Example: Just as a police officer doesn’t fear traffic because of the badge of authority, believers don’t fear darkness because they are seated above it in Christ.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: You may live on earth, but your authority comes from heaven.
Point 3 – We Are Carriers of God’s Presence
Point 3 – We Are Carriers of God’s Presence
📖 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…?”
Jesus knew the Father was with Him. We must also walk aware that the Spirit of God lives within us.
Story: A missionary in a dangerous region testified that enemies couldn’t harm him because “there was a glow” around him. That’s the Spirit within!
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: God is not just with you; He is in you, empowering every step.
Point 4 – We Are Ambassadors of Christ
Point 4 – We Are Ambassadors of Christ
📖 2 Corinthians 5:20 – “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ…”
Knowing who we are means living as heaven’s representatives.
Example: When an ambassador speaks, it carries the weight of their nation. Likewise, when we speak God’s Word, heaven backs it.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: You are not just representing yourself—you carry the authority of the Kingdom.
Point 5 – We Are More Than Conquerors
Point 5 – We Are More Than Conquerors
📖 Romans 8:37 – “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
Jesus never wavered in His mission, and neither should we. Our victory is already guaranteed.
Illustration: Like a team that wins a game before stepping on the field, we live from victory, not for victory.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: The cross didn’t just give you survival—it gave you unstoppable victory.
Point 6 – We Are Destined with Purpose and Direction
Point 6 – We Are Destined with Purpose and Direction
📖 Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you… to give you a future and a hope.”
📖 Philippians 3:14 – “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Jesus said He knew where He was going. We too must walk with divine direction.
Real-Life Example: A GPS guides you turn by turn. The Holy Spirit is our divine GPS, ensuring we reach the destiny God has prepared.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: You are not wandering—you are walking in destiny.
Point 7 – We Are Loved with an Everlasting Love
Point 7 – We Are Loved with an Everlasting Love
📖 Romans 8:38–39 – Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
📖 1 John 3:1 – “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”
Identity is anchored in love. If we doubt God’s love, we will doubt who we are.
Story: A father once told his child, “Even if you fail, you’ll always be mine.” That’s the Father’s heart for us.
🔥 Spirit-filled Thought: You are not tolerated—you are celebrated by heaven.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Jesus declared with confidence: “I know where I came from and where I am going.” As His disciples, we must do the same. We are born of God, seated in heavenly places, filled with His Spirit, carrying Kingdom authority, walking in victory, destined for purpose, and wrapped in unshakable love.
When we know who we are, we live boldly for Christ, unshaken by the world’s accusations, fear, or doubt.
Closing Prayer
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that our identity is not found in the world, but in You. Help us to walk with the same assurance that Jesus had, knowing we are Your children, filled with Your Spirit, and destined for glory. Break every chain of insecurity, fear, and confusion. Today, let us rise as sons and daughters of the Most High, bold in our calling, secure in Your love, and confident in who we are in Christ. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen. 🔥
