✨ Introduction: When the Odds Are Against You
✨ Introduction: When the Odds Are Against You
Have you ever faced something so overwhelming, so impossible, that you honestly didn’t know what to do?
It might have been a medical diagnosis… a financial crisis… a broken relationship… or a spiritual battle you didn’t see coming.
It’s in those moments — when we’re completely outmatched — that we find out where our faith really stands.
There’s a scene in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness that perfectly captures this. Will Smith plays Chris Gardner — a man who goes from having a job and a home to being homeless and unemployed, all while raising a small son. He has every reason to give up. The odds are completely against him.
But in a quiet moment, he tells his son:
“Don’t ever let somebody tell you… you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it.”
Why does that hit so hard?
Because we all know what it feels like to be told we can’t.
We all know what it’s like to feel defeated before the fight even begins.
But today, I want to tell you what Chris told his son — and what God told King Jehoshaphat:
Don’t give up. The odds may be against you — but God is for you.
The battle is not yours… it’s the Lord’s.

“After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat.”
Jehoshaphat isn’t in sin. He hasn’t disobeyed God. But trouble still comes.
Three nations — a massive army — unite against Judah. They were outnumbered, outmanned, and outmatched.

🔹 Application:
Sometimes the enemy shows up even when you’re doing things right.
Trouble is not always a sign of failure — sometimes it’s a setup for God to show His strength.

🙏 II. The Reaction of Faith (vv. 3–5)
“Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the Lord…”
Jehoshaphat’s first response isn’t strategy — it’s seeking.
He gathers the people, calls for fasting, and turns his face to God.
He didn’t call the generals — he called for prayer.
🔹 Application:
🔹 Application:
When the odds are against you, your first weapon is worship, not worry.
📖 III. The Power of Prayer (vv. 6–12)
📖 III. The Power of Prayer (vv. 6–12)
Jehoshaphat prays a bold, honest, God-honoring prayer.
He:
Recognizes who God is: “Are You not the God in heaven?”
Reminds God of His promises: “Did You not drive out the inhabitants?”
Reveals his own weakness: “We do not know what to do… but our eyes are on You.”
That last line is everything:
“We do not know what to do… but our eyes are on You.” (v. 12)
That is the heart of prayer. That’s the posture of victory.

🔹 Application:
Sometimes the best thing you can say to God is, “I don’t know, but I’m looking at You.”
🕊️ IV. The Word of the Lord (vv. 13–15)
🕊️ IV. The Word of the Lord (vv. 13–15)
God responds through the prophet Jahaziel.
“Do not be afraid or dismayed… for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (v. 15)
Here’s what God promises:
Don’t be afraid.
Stand still.
Watch what I’m about to do.
This is the turning point — not when the battle is fought, but when God speaks.
🔹 Application:
🔹 Application:
Victory doesn’t start on the battlefield.
It starts when you believe what God says over what you see.
✝️ Conclusion: When You Don’t Have the Strength… God Does
✝️ Conclusion: When You Don’t Have the Strength… God Does
Jehoshaphat didn’t win with swords — he won with surrender.
He didn’t fight with fear — he stood in faith.
The army showed up, but God fought the battle.
Let me tell you this today:
You may be outnumbered, but you’re not outpowered.
You may not know what to do, but your eyes can still be on Him.
You may feel weak, but God is still strong.
And most of all —
The battle is not yours… it’s the Lord’s.

Just like Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness, you might be walking through the hardest season of your life. But don’t listen to the voices saying you can’t make it.
Protect the dream. Protect the calling. Protect your faith.
Because the same God who delivered Judah from a massive enemy army…
…is still fighting battles for His people today.
🛐 Altar Call / Closing Prayer
🛐 Altar Call / Closing Prayer
“Lord, we confess today that we don’t always know what to do. But we choose to set our eyes on You.
We give You every battle, every fear, every impossibility — because the battle is not ours… it’s Yours.
Help us to trust You even when we’re outnumbered.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
