Context

Context to Paul and the letters.

This was a letter written to the church of Colossae, by a guy named Paul who wrote most of the old testement. He wrote letters to the church’s that he planted or needed help. This letter was written as a letter guiding the church through what an early biblical church looked like.

Application to us

Today we are going to read in one of those letters, and look at how it can guide our life in this new beginning of the school year. With a new beginning of a year you get new opportunities to have a fresh start with new people. So lets look what the bible says about new beginnings.

Verses

Colossians 3:12-17 “Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassions, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect body of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body rule your hearts. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:23-25 “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ, For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favoritism.”

Gospel Presentation

Some of of here might be asking what does it mean to draw close to God, or I don’t think I ever have drawn close to God. Drawing close to God is wanting to have a relationship with him and pursuing a relationship with him. Following his commands and wanting to be with him. If you have never taken a first step of faith this school year lean in to what is going to be taught. Some of you might be in a new class room with a new teacher and some with the same one you had from last year but either way lean in to what they have to say. Open your hearts to what God is going to teach you about himself. In the verses that we just read it tells us that God has forgiven us, if you are wondering what it would look like to accept that forgivness talk to me or one of your teachers this year about what it would look like to follow pursuit in trusting God.
