Main Idea:
Discipleship is not a destination; it's a journey we invite others to join. Our ultimate purpose, as disciples, is to multiply ourselves for God's glory.
The Word:
Matthew 4:18–22 ESV
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
What does it mean to be a "fisher of men"?
A “fisherman” is someone who is equipped to do the work of fishing.
A “fisher of men” is someone who is equipped to do the work of discipleship.
What are the natural spheres of influence God has given us (friends, family, school, sports teams)?
How can we share our faith without being weird or pushy?
1 Peter 3:15–16 “15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.”
2 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
What does it mean to "entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others"? (The 2 Timothy 2:2 model)
4 Generations of discipleship:
1st = Paul
2nd = Timothy (“what you have heard”)
3rd = Timothy’s disciples (“entrust to faithful men”)
4th = Timothy’s disciples’ disciples (“others”)
Challenge:
In your phone, make a note and write down the name of a friend of yours who you know needs to hear the gospel. Commit to praying for them, look for opportunities to serve them, and finally, look for an opportunity to share with them!
Tool: 3 Circles
Games:
The Group Mind Challenge
Objective: For your team to correctly line up in a specific order before other teams.
How to Play: The leader calls out a category (e.g., "by height" or "by birthday month"), and teams must silently arrange themselves in the correct order. The first team to be correctly lined up wins a point.
