280. On Paying Taxes to Caesar
Similarities in the synoptics
It is easy to see they are telling the same story by the words they use, and where they are located in the gospels.
They all use a lot of the same words many times the same phrases in the same places.
Matthew and Mark are close to word order also.
Differences
Matthew says the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus so they sent some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod.
Luke says leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus.
Luke says leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men.
John 3:2 also shows that one Pharisee also speaks of Jesus sent to teach.
281. The Question about the Resurrection
John does not record this conversation Jesus has with the Sadducees.
As with the previous section we see the same story being told at the same time in Jesus’ ministry.
There are so many similarities it would be to much to go through them all.
The only significant difference is that Matthew and Mark say Jesus tells them “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.
Luke on the other hand has Jesus saying, “Marriage is for people here on earth.”
282. The Great Commandment (See no 182)
We already discussed this event in a previous section.
283. The Question about David’s Son
John records nothing of this event.
Again we see the synoptic Gospels are saying the exact same thing and using many of the same exact phrases.
Matthew says Jesus was surrounded by Pharisees and he asked them a question.
Mark says he was teaching in the Temple and asked.
Luke says he presented them with a question.
284. Woe to the Scribes and Pharisees
Here we see Matthew has a long list of “Woe’s” for the Teachers of religious law and the Pharisees.
What we read in Mark and Luke we also find in Matthew, and a whole lot more.
Jesus’ quote in Mark 12:37-40 and Luke 20:45-47 are word for word (except three words - Mark adds more before severely punished, and Luke adds “and love” before receive respectful greetings
John records a teaching Jesus does after washing his disciples feet.
It is important to note that only John records Jesus washing his disciples feet.
We’ll get to this later but John’s gospel does not record the institution of the Lord’s Supper ie. communion.
285. The Lament over Jerusalem (See no 213)
We have already discussed this event.
I will say this, while it is almost word for word but Matthew adds a few.
Matthew has it after the Woe’s to the Scribes and Pharisees but Luke records it during Jesus’ teachings through the towns and villages on his way to Jerusalem.
286. The Widow’s Mite
Only Mark and Luke record this even it is important to note that it comes right after Mark’s and Luke’s quote in the Woe’s to the Scribes and Pharisees section.
