What is Hurry?

living at the pace culture sets
"hurry" is defined as moving or acting quickly, and can be used as both a verb and a noun to describe great haste or urgency
“a state of frantic effort one falls into in response to inadequacy, fear, and guilt.”
This cultural tendency towards hurry can lead to mistakes, damaged relationships, poor decisions, and increased irritability
“love, joy, peace are incompatible with hurry”
Everything we make is to do something faster and faster
phones

cars

the hebrew day starts in the evening
Genesis 1:5 “God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”
When we hurry we jump on railroad tracks and this ever increasing pace until we crash morally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually
Jesus was never in a hurry and did not mind being interrupted
Luke 8:40-56

What is Rest?

Rest is described as freedom from labor, a time for repose and refreshment . It serves as a restorative break from physical labor and worldly striving, providing an opportunity for mental and spiritual restoration living at the pace God sets
different aspects of rest
emotional
if we go from one high strung or dramatic interaction to another we will never be emotionally rested
physical
just get enough sleep please people
spiritual
We will focus on spiritual rest but the others are important
Psalm 23:1–3 “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
Matthew 11:28–30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.””

How do we rest?

We slow down
the key is doing less not more.
Learn to say no
Mediate on Gods word
Psalm 119:15–16 “I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”
Take a walk
Put down your phone.
When we are not busy we are distracted
and in doing so we partially rest and not fully giving us this half-existence like someone who only slept for a couple of hours
Do life giving activities
pray

What can we do to rest more?
