The Word Lived Out

Open your bible with me to Luke 8:16-21
Let me take you back to the 1500s.
In England, the Word of God was lockedaway—
read only in Latin, in churches, by clergy.
Ordinary people, farmers, mothers, tradesmen—
most had never held a Bible, let alone read it for themselves.
God's Word was being preached,
but few could truly hear it in their own language,
and even fewer could obey it fully.
The light of Scripture was burning,
But it was hidden behind walls of tradition, hierarchy, and control.
And then came William Tyndale.
Tyndale was a brilliant scholar—
educated at Oxford and fluent in Greekand Hebrew.
But more than that, he was a man gripped by a burning conviction:
“If God has spoken, then the people must hear—
and NOT in Latin, but in the language of their hearts.”
He once said to a priest,
“If God spare my life, ere many years
I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scripture than thou dost.”
That statement would eventually cost him everything.
Tyndale began translating the Bible into English—
NOT from Latin, but from the original Greek and Hebrew.
Because of the danger,
he had to flee England and workin secret on the continent.
His New Testament was smuggled into England,
where it was eagerly read—but also publicly burned by church officials.
Eventually, he was betrayed, imprisoned,
and in 1536, he was executed—
then his body was burned at the stake.
His final words were a prayer:
“Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.”
That prayer was answered.
Within just a few years, English Bibles were printed and distributed widely—
And Tyndale’s translation became the foundation
for the King James Bible and almost every English Bible that came after.
Tyndale heard the Word. He letit shine. And he obeyed it—even unto death.
Jesus said, “No one lights a lamp and hides it under a jar.”
Tyndale didn’t hide the light.
He shared it.
He lived as a child of light—
hearing God’s Word and obeying it,
even when it cost him his life.
The question for us today is: Are we doing the same?
We have the Word—more access than ever.
But are we hearingit carefully?
Are we living it obediently?
Are we shining it clearly?
That’s exactly what Luke 8 is about.
Sermon Summary: Live as children of light, hearing God's Word and obeying it fully.
16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” 19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

I. Hear the Word and Let It Shine (v.16-17)
I. Hear the Word and Let It Shine (v.16-17)
Contextually, Jesus has been speaking about the work of the word of God.
He has done that through the use of parables.
Specifically, the parables of the soil.
In all different types of soils or hearts hear the word,
but only those whose hearts have been softened, honest,
and have been made goodby the Lord,
hear the word and bear fruit!
So Jesus is concerned with the heart of the good soil,
is how they live in light of hearing the word.
That the word of God is at work,
but now Jesus gives another series of parables
to show us how the wordis lived out
in the hearts of the hearers.
16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
Recall that Jesus’ word prior is that the point of parables
was to both simplify truth and also conceal truth.
So much of what we read here is intentionally confusing.
That is the point, that Spiritual truth
requires the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit.
It is NOT cognitive understanding needed,
but supernatural spiritual understanding.
Jesus’ point here is that the light of God’s word, Jesus’ teaching,
is only as useful to the extent that you use it.
That is, you don’t take something
like a light and cover it up;
you don’t put it under a bed or a basket.
Instead, something like a light
is intended to be displayed,
so that others may see it!!
Yet, what was this light or lamp?
Was it Jesus’ teaching?
Was it the word of God?
Was it the disciples themselves?
To which, I would say, yes! To both.
Zecheriah prophesied of his Son John the Baptist
that he would proclaim the wordof God -
Luke 1:79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Simeon declared of Jesus at the Temple –
29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Yet, it’s clear that Jesus intends this light
be demonstrated in His disciples,
whose hearts the word has been sown among good soil.
And yet, throughout the Old Testament,
really throughout the scripture.
God’s people do NOT heed His word.
Instead, they fail to listen.
They hear, but do not heed!
11 “But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. 12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. 13 Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!
Here is what Isaiah says of Israel – Isaiah 30:8-9
8 And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever. 9 For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord;
This type of rebellion speaks to the heart of a person.
To the heartof the hearer who reveals their heart
to be hard, calloused, cold,
choked out by the cares of the world,
and the word NOT bearing fruit.
But Jesus says, you disciples,
have received the word, my words, God’s word,
which is given to you, and you receive it, hear, and understand it.
And it ought to then SHINE!!
In your life and practice.
It ought to be carried on to others,
so they hear the word of God, and they seethe word lived!!
The word is at work, and now ought to be seen!!
That others may see this light!!
Beloved, Hidden discipleship is often mistaken for false discipleship.
A hidden light forsakes the purposes of light.
So what does this look like in everyday life?
It means letting the Word shape how you speak to your family,
how you treat coworkers, how you respond to stress or conflict.
It means being quick to forgive, generous with your time,
bold in your witness, and consistent in your walk.
Ask yourself daily, “Is the light of Christ visible in me today?”
Start simple: pray with and for those in need,
mention your faith in conversation,
be open and bold about the gospel!
Small acts of obedience
become bright lights in a dark world.
But Christian, may the light of Christ
and the light of His word shine in us, and through us!!
The word of God landing on the heart,
bearing fruit of the word of God,
ought to be demonstrated and seen
in the world through the lives of those
who receive the word, and do what it says!!
Jesus continues in verse 17
17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
Jesus says what is hidden will be made clear.
Those who receive His word in faith will be clearly revealed.
It will be visible, evident. ….And anything secret,
such as the mystery of the kingdom (v.10),
and those things kept NOT known in parables,
will eventually be obvious.
That is, that which is hidden in parables
will become obvious to all.
God’s word will become clear to everyone.
And one day, their rejection and rebellion of God’s word
will become clear as well.
But also, the hidden works of man
will also be on clear display.
In the same way that God’s word illuminates and shines,
it will be revealed.
So too, will the hearts of men become obvious!!
That is, all people will be judged as violators of the word.
That God will make known the intentions and hearts of men.
Solomon’s Word in
13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Eventually, the whole truth of our lives will be revealed.
That is true for both believers and non-believers.
Yet, know that Jesus is speaking contextually
to those who have received His word, out of a good heart.
And the word Luke uses in v.17 – for manifest –
meaning to make visible or evident.
Is used again in Luke 12.
1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.
I take that to mean that contextually, Luke is angling
his use of that word herein the same way.
That Luke and Jesus intended to warn against hypocrisy.
Of those who would appear to receive the word,
and then NOT obey it.
Hear the word, appear to receive it, and then NOT live it.
Do NOT use the light as it is intended.
So, let us take care, then, of how we hear.
If the light of God’s Word has shone into your heart,
don’t hide it—live it out.
Let it shape your thoughts, your words, and your actions.
The day is coming when all will be revealed—
every hidden thing brought into the light.
For those who have truly receivedChrist’s Word,
that light will be a testimony of grace, growth, and faithfulness.
But for those who have only appeared to receive it—
those who wear a mask of faith without obedience—
their hypocrisy will be exposed.
So let me ask: Is your lifevisibly shaped by God's truth?
Do your priorities, your relationships,
and your habits reflect the light of Christ?
Where are you hiding light that should be seen?
What part of your life is still under a basket,
kept private when God is calling you to let it shine?
Today is the day to examine your heart.
The light is NOT meant to be hidden—it is meant to shine.
So receive the Word, live by the Word,
and let the light of Christ shine through you for the glory of God.
For those who have truly receivedChrist’s Word,
that light will stand as a testimony of grace and faithfulness.
But for those who only appeared to receive it—
those who wore the mask of belief but lived in disobedience—
their hypocrisy will be exposed….
That is, we must take CARE…and that’s what Jesus says next!
--------------------------------------------------- Hear the Word and Let It Shine
II. Hear the Word With Serious Intent (v.18)
II. Hear the Word With Serious Intent (v.18)
18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
Jesus gives a clear command here in this text –
TAKE CARE. Or be vigilant. LOOK OUT. BE CAREFUL…
SEE – JESUS says, how you hear!!
That is, how you listen! SEE how you listen….
WATCH how you hear the word!!
And then gives statements – one positive, and one negative.
Positively, that is the one who has….
that is, they have heard and received the word,
and liveout the word. MORE will be given.
Then negatively,
from the one who has NOT,
that is, has NOT received and obeyed the word.
That is, they ignored God’s word; they didn’t listen.
Even what he thinks he has will be taken away.
Jesus’ parables have been somewhat of a warning –
be careful what you do with TRUTH.
And we ought to be careful
how we respond to God’s word.
Lest we receive it and NOT live it.
And it fails to bear fruit in our lives.
Jesus is clear
that those who receive the word and listen well
are like those of the good soil.
Note that all soils heard the word,
but only one soil, the good soil, bears fruit.
Jesus stands to reason
that those who receive the word in this way,
more will be given.
They will continue to understand the truth
and apply the truth from their good heart.
And it will continually reveal the softness and good soil of their heart.
Both for others – those who reject it.
Those who fail to allow the word to produce good fruit.
Even what he thinks he has will be taken away!!
These are those who hear, but don’t listen.
They hear, but if they took notice to SEE –
it would be evident, the word is NOT taking root!!
They hear the word preached.
They may sit in churches.
The claim to be Christian,
perhaps they have received baptism or the Lord’s supper,
yet their lives never bear fruit of the gospel.
And their religion is of no value to them,
because they make no use of what has been given.
Their hearts are unaffected.
Calloused and cold.
They are still bitter, angry, and frustrated.
Living as one unregenerated,
though maybe even professing Jesus.
Jesus says it's going to be clear!
Moreover, there is no spiritual neutrality.
There is no spiritual idleness.
Standing still with the word is impossible…..
Jesus is showing us that the word is either bearing fruit or it isn’t.
And for the one who is bearing fruit,
they will continue bearing more.
And for the one who is slipping backwards,
to be warned,
even what he thinks he has will be taken away.
Those who receive the word and liveit.
Receive more, and bear more fruit.
Those who hear and refuse to listen,
even what they think they have, will be taken away.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
Beloved, what are you doing with the word of God?
How are you listening and applying the truth of Christ to your daily walk?
How are you living out the purposes of the word you have received?
Are you hearing and receiving,
and living with a view towards obedience?
Or are you letting it land and leaving unchanged by the truth of Christ?
May this serve as a warning to the casual hearer of the word of God.
God rewards the careful listener and obedient
with more understanding, truth, and fruit.
But for the casual listener,
even what he thinks he has will be taken away.
So ask yourself honestly:
How are you receiving the word – SEE HOW YOU LISTEN, BELOVED!!
Do you come to Scripture with a heart ready to submit,
or merely to learn facts, debate doctrine, or critique what you hear?
The difference is life-changing.
The Word of God was never meant to simply inform—but to transform.
When you open your Bible, come humbly.
Ask the Lord to soften your heart,
to help you NOT just hear, but heed.
Let His Word correct you, comfort you,
and shape your decisions.
Today, how is God calling you to respond?
That is Jesus' point,
that we don’t just hear the word, we live it out!
We apply it! We listen and we obey!!
Maybe it’s forgiving someone,
confessing sin, stepping out in obedience,
or simply slowing down to listen. Don’t delay.
The call is clear:
those who listen well will be given more.
Those who harden their hearts—
even what they think they have will slip away.
Let today be a day where you NOT only hear,
but obey—and bear lasting fruit.
It’s worth asking, then, beloved,
what is the fruit of the word in your life?
NOT so much that you have external platitudes of hearing the word.
Jesus says all the souls hear, the seed of the word of God…
The question is,
what does the fruit of your life display
about the seed of God's word in your heart?
NOT just what you say about yourself,
but what your life says about your heart.
NOT just how the word is heard from you,
but howGod's truth is seen in you.
In public moments, but also in private moments.
How are you living in the secret places no one sees?
The secret attitudes and posture of your heart.
That Jesus will be clearly seen and revealed, there!.
And have we NOT lost the fear of God?
In our society and our world.
And maybe even in our hearts.
When we speak of His love,
yet live as thoughHis holiness does NOT matter.
We live in sin, justify sin, and even celebrate sin!
forgetting that grace is NOT a license
but a call to repentance.
There is judgment coming!—and it is real.
“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Hebrews 10:31
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Let that sober us.
Let it awaken us.
The God who saves is also the God who judges.
May we return to the fear of the Lord—
NOT in dread, but in holy reverence.
A heart bowed low. A life laid bare.
Bearing fruit that proves the Word has taken root.
--------------------------------------------------- Hear The Word With Serious Intent
III. Hear the Word and Do it as Christ’s Family (v.19-21)
III. Hear the Word and Do it as Christ’s Family (v.19-21)
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
I mentioned this last week,
of how the flow may seem a little strange.
What do the women of the word in Luke 8:1-3,
have to do with the parable of the soils?
Hopefully, I made that clear last week,
and also now made it clear how the parableof the soils
relates to the parable of the light of the lamp shining….
but perhaps here we are puzzled again,
what does Jesus' family have to do with shining a lightof God’s word?
Jesus summarizes this section by showingus
that it is those who hear the word and obey it,
are the true children of God.
That is, they are the true family of Jesus,
namely those who hear the word, receive it, and live it out.
Here we see Jesus’ biological family come to him.
This demonstrates the humanity of Jesus.
He was born of a woman and had a family.
His father, Joseph, is NOT mentioned, and most believe
it is likely because Joseph’s earthly father has since died.
In fact, Joseph is NOT mentioned beyond Luke 2
and Jesus’ dedication at the Temple.
Luke doesn’t record him here,
and no gospel writer records him at the crucifixion.
And so most conclude he had passed away.
Another point of consideration
is his relationship with his brothers and mother.
Jesus had brothers.
Mary and Joseph had other children together,
and were a part of Jesus’ family.
Among them would be James, the half-brother of Jesus,
who was obviously younger than Jesus, since Mary was a virgin,
and half-brother because Jesus is the Son of God.
But Jesus, clearly here in this text,
has other siblings.
Mark records these words –
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
I highlight this because some deny Jesus’ familial relationship.
Much is because of erroneousCatholic doctrine
that claims Mary was a perpetual virgin.
Some believe these were NOT really his brothers or siblings,
but instead, his cousins, and that any children belonging to Mary
were because of Joseph’s children from a marriage prior to Mary.
Clearly, we are far from anything found in scripture.
The simpler solution is to let the bible interpret the bible.
And let the text speak.
This is Jesus’ family.
Jesus was the firstborn son of the Virgin Mary,
and Joseph and Mary had other children after this,
of whom are His brothers and his mother.
Jesus continually honoredMary
and obeyed the 5th Commandment to honor your father and mother.
Jesus loved them, though much of Jesus’ family
did NOT believe Him to be the Christ until after the resurrection.
There is clearly a close association
that Luke wants us to see here.
In Jesus’ family, they come to him,
but are unable to reach him because a large crowd is surrounding him.
So someone says to Jesus, Your mother and brother are here.
Now we don’t know exactly what they want to say to Jesus.
Perhaps they needed his help.
Perhaps they just wanted to pull him aside to say something in private.
It’s clear they had something they intended to say to Jesus –
Mark again records for us, at some point –
20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
So we don’t know what they wanted to say,
but we do know that most of his biological family
did NOT believe His word.
But either way, it was going to be
an interruption of His ministry and teaching.
And so Jesus clarifies those
who truly belong to Him and are a part of God’s family in Christ.
Are NOT those who are related to Jesus by biology,
but by truth!
Namely, they are those who followHim in obedience.
This is made clear – YOUR MOTHER AND BROTHERS
are standing outside, desiring to see you. …
BUT JESUS ANSWERED –
MY mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Who belongs in the kingdom of God,
who is in the family of Christ? –
It is those who hear the word and obey it.
Those who receive it and do it!
They live it out.
They are like the good soil,
on who the Word lands on their hearts,
and they bear fruit from a good heart!
They are like James says – both hearers of the word and DOERS of the Word!
God’s family is identified by their obedience to God’s word.
They are about doing the Father’s business (Luke 2:49).
They are concerned more than just intellectual ascent,
but about heart transformation
and obedience to what God has spoken!
Those who belong to Christ
demonstrate their possession in Christ
by living lives of obedience to Christ.
That in the same way that a light shines for all to see.
That fruit is born and bears the soil of the heart,
so then the lives of those who belong to Christ
are seen in those who obey HIM!
This has several implications for us.
The first of which is the nature of our Spiritual family.
Jesus means to show us there is real kinship
within the family of God.
This family is NOT defined by blood or earthly lineage,
but by spiritual rebirth.
Those who do the will of the Father
are truly Christ’s brothers, sisters, and mother.
Our shared obedience becomes the thread
that binds us together as members of the same household—
united NOT just in belief,
but in lifestyle, love, and mission.
That means the bond we share with fellow believers is eternal.
It’s not based on blood,
but in the Spirit.
While biological relationships are temporary,
the family of God lasts forever.
So we’re called to love, serve, and honor each other—
NOT just as friends, but as true family in Christ.
This truth shapes how we live in the local church.
In Christ, we don’t just attend the same service—
we belong to the same family.
Jesus said, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, sister, and mother”
That means the relationships we build in the church
are NOT optional or superficial—
they are spiritual, eternal, and deeply real.
The local church is where this spiritual family
becomes visible and tangible.
It’s where we bear each other’s burdens,
forgive one another, challenge one another,
and grow together in obedience to Christ.
In a world of shallow connections,
the church is meant to be a living demonstration
of a family bonded NOT by blood, but by the gospel.
Another implication is the implication
of the Spiritual New Birth we have been given in Christ.
That is, we have been born again.
And in being born again, we have been transformed by God.
He has made us into New Creations in Christ.
In which the old is gone and the New has come.
This is the heart of the gospel:
though we were dead in our sin, God, in His mercy,
sent His SonJesus to live the perfect life we could not live,
to die the death we deserved,
and to rise again in victory over sin and death.
When we turn from our sin and trust in Him,
we are forgiven, made new, and adopted into God’s family.
We are no longer defined by who we once were,
but by what Jesus has done for us.
The gospel is full of familial language
that shows how salvation brings us into God’s family.
Through faith in Christ, we are:
Adopted as sons and daughters of God (Ephesians 1:5)
Made children of God (John 1:12)
Called brothers and sisters in Christ (Romans 8:29)
Jesus is our elder brother (Romans 8:29)
Welcomed into the household of God(Ephesians 2:19)
This means salvation isn’t just forgiveness—it’s belonging.
We’re no longer spiritual orphans or outsiders.
We’ve been brought into a real, eternal family—
with God as our Father, Jesus as our elder brother,
and the Church as our spiritual siblings.
Maybe you’ve heard about Jesus before,
but never realized what He’s actually inviting you into.
The gospel is NOT just good advice—it’s good news.
It’s the announcement that through Jesus Christ,
you can be forgiven, made new,
and welcomed into the family of God.
And here’s the invitation:
If you will turn from your sin (repentance) and trust in Jesus (in faith)—
believing that He died for you and rose again—
you will be saved.
You will be adopted as a child of God.
You’ll no longer be defined by your past,
but by the love and grace of your Father in heaven.
Jesus’ point is that this would be seen clearly
that those who belong to Christ will obey Him (Luke 8:21)
Jesus makes it clear in Luke 8:21 that those who truly belong to Him
are recognized by their obedience:
“My mother and my brothers are those who hear the Word of God and Do it”
We’ve seen Mary in Luke, willing to do just that,
Luke 1:38
38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
And after the resurrection, she wasn’t the only one.
Others in Jesus' biological family, too, would believe in Jesus.
Luke records these words in
14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
That is while Jesus' earthly family
might also share in Jesus' heavenly family.
It is only to the degree
that they come to Christin faith and obey Him!
And the same is true today.
Belonging to Christ isn’t just about words or feelings—
it’s about a life that reflectsHis Lordship through obedience.
This obedience is the visible mark
of our spiritual family and our new identity in Him.
So, as we close, let me ask you.
Does your life show family resemblance to Christ?
You don’t become a part of God’s family because you obey,
but you reveal yourself to be truly in God’s family
through your lifein Christ and in obedience to Him!
So may we live as true CHILDREN of GOD….
Sermon Summary: Live as children of light, hearing God's Word and obeying it fully.
