Psalm 22:1 CSB
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?

INTRO—

אֵלִ֣י אֵ֭לִי לָמָ֣ה עֲזַבְתָּ֑נִי
“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” (Psalm 22.1a)
Psalm 22 is a psalm of lament…& is also seen in Jewish culture as a Royal Psalm (“A psalm of David,” thus King David…& used in the context of the Festival of Purim, thus Queen Esther)
Why did Jesus quote this psalm? (Not an accident; drawing attention to the “righteous sufferer” and showing the deep prophetic nature of this psalm…etc.)
Psalm 22:22 “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters; I will praise you in the assembly.”
Hebrews 2:12 “saying: I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters; I will sing hymns to you in the congregation.” (context = Hebrews 2.10-12; about Jesus and his work of redemption through suffering and as a result calls those he redeems “brothers and sisters.”)
SOOO…WHAT IS THE GOOD NEWS WE SEE IN PSALM 22…AND PSALM 69? (Psalm 69 = “Of David;” lament of a suffering servant of/for righteousness; similarities to Jeremiah seen here; Psalms 22, 69 are the top two psalms referenced regarding Jesus and The Passion, specifically) [I LOVE being able to tie the OT & NT together…so let’s go!]

Sorrow [Psalm 22 & Psalm 69]

[[Looking at the prophetic nature of these psalms chronologically.]]
Psalm 69:9 “because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”
John 2:17 “And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me.” (context = John 2.13-17…Jesus to Jerusalem, Temple, money changers, & tables overturned)
Psalm 69:4 “Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay.”
John 15:25 “But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled: They hated me for no reason.” (context = John 15.18-25; & John 15.1ff)
Psalm 69:8 “I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons”
John 7:4–5 “For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” (For not even his brothers believed in him.)” (context = John 7.1-9, Jesus’ brothers urge him to go to Jerusalem for the Festival of Shelters (Booths) to prove (show) himself…though they didn’t yet believe him)
Psalm 22:16 “For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet.”
Luke 23:33 “When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.” (saying ‘crucified’ = John 20:25 “So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.””)
Psalm 22:18 “They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.”
John 19:24 “So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.”
Psalm 22:7–8 “Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads: “He relies on the Lord; let him save him; let the Lord rescue him, since he takes pleasure in him.””
Matthew 27:39–43 “Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him and said, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God rescue him now—if he takes pleasure in him! For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ””
Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?” (note also, Psalm 22.1-6)
Matthew 27:46 “About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?””
Psalm 22:15 “My strength is dried up like baked clay; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You put me into the dust of death.”
John 19:28 “After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.””
Psalm 69:21 “Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”
John 19:29 “A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth.” (also…Matthew 27:34 “they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.”; happened as they came to Golgotha)
John 19:30 “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.”

Celebration [Psalm 22 & Psalm 69]

Psalm 22.22-31. (highlights = vv. 24-25, 31)
Psalm 22:24–25 “For he has not despised or abhorred the torment of the oppressed. He did not hide his face from him but listened when he cried to him for help. I will give praise in the great assembly because of you; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear you.”
Psalm 22:31 “They will come and declare his righteousness; to a people yet to be born they will declare what he has done.”
Psalm 69.30-36. (highlights = vv. 30, 32-33)
Psalm 69:30 “I will praise God’s name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving.”
Psalm 69:32–33 “The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart! For the Lord listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.”
To this very day we celebrate the goodness and greatness of our God, especially thanking and praising him for his great salvation—to his glory and for our good.
