Walking in the light

I John 1 part 2
1 John 1:5–10 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
Intro: We live in a dark world. Charlie Kirk.
When you walk into a dark room, what do you do? Turn on the light. Why? You don’t want to stumble.
VS 5 tells us that God is light. John tells us we are to walk in the light.
We are to have fellowship with God.
Fellowship: The word used for “fellowship” here is koinōnia, meaning communion, sharing, having things in common.
What keeps us from having fellowship with God? SIN.
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
VS 5
The message: Notice it is not just “a message”. This is the true message of the gospel. This message Jesus gave to his disciples and gave to us.
The message was of Him and about Him. The words spoken form Jesus was spoken in their presence.
This message John is giving to us, that our joy may be full.
The message to declare is God is light:
Light: Manifestation of God’s self-existent life/Divine illumination.
Light is the Word of God is an emblem of purity, holiness, truth, knowledge. Darkness is just the opposite. God is light and Satan is darkness.
“God is light” He is not a light, or the light. He is light itself, and about apart from Him there is no light.
“God is light” The light of God points towards the glory of God, the knowledge of God, and the holiness of God.
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 NKJV
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
How do we tells the diffirence? How walking in the true light.
In Him there is no darkness at all: Here John (through the Holy Spirit) affirms that God is absolutely perfect, absolutely holy, and absolutely true.
There is no imperfection in him, nothing can dim light that God is.
Darkness: Dimness/obscurity.
The first thing God did in Creation was to “command the light to shine out of darkness
Genesis 1:1–2 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:3 NKJV
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
2 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV
6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Dark and light when it comes to spiritual manners cannot walk together.
Amos 3:3 NKJV
3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
Psalm 89:15 NKJV
15 Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
VS 6
1 John 1:6 NKJV
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
Fellowship: Partnership/something shared in common.
If a person claims to be saved, declaring to be a follower of Jesus, but they live in the world and walks with the world and fellowships with the world, the Word of God clearly declares that person is a lair.
They are many that profess to be Christians but are not.
We all sin, but those who practice sin. Elab
1 John 2:15 NKJV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Romans 8:14 NKJV
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
What we have today is a lot of religious people. Elab
Christianity is a person-Christ.
Christianity is light-Jesus said I am the light.
Christianity brings peace-John 14:27
John 14:27 NKJV
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Christianity makes us pure-Heb 12:14
Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
Christianity brings Joy- I Peter 1:8
1 Peter 1:8 NKJV
8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
Christianity causes us to act differently-
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
VS 7
1 John 1:7 NKJV
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Walk: I conduct my life.
As believers/followers of Jesus means that we walk in the light. We lead a life of purity, and holiness, looking to Jesus, allowing Him to direct our steps.
As He is in the light: It means that when we are saved we are partakers of divine nature.
II Pet 1:4 By this we are of the same light that God is. We do not possess the light in the same degree that God is light, but we possess the same kind of light. We possess God nature in the person of the Holy Spirit. Rom 8:9; John 3:5
2 Peter 1:4 NKJV
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Romans 8:9 NKJV
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
John 3:5 NKJV
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
We are not children of darkness we are children of light, and we have no excuse to walk in darkness, and should have no desire to walk in darkness.
We have fellowship one with another:
All believers belong to God’s family. I Cor. 12:12-14
1 Corinthians 12:12–14 NKJV
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
We love the same God, we embrace the same truth of God’s word.
We may not see eye to eye on everything.
The blood of Jesus Christ His son cleanseth us from all sin:
Notice the word “cleanseth” not has cleansed (past tense) or will clean (future tense). But cleanseth us. Day by day, as we trust in the finished work of Jesus.
VS 8
1 John 1:8 NKJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
No matter how much we try to separate ourselves from the world. No matter how much of a holy life we lead, we cannot escape sin. (tell story of man during the civil war)
Sin has roots; sin bears fruit.
Roots: We were all born into sin. (All have sinned and come short of glory of God)
Roots produce fruit. As long as we are in our earthly bodies (flesh) there will be a battle. But the Holy Spirit will give us victory. Gal 5:16
Galatians 5:16 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
So what do we do when we sin?
VS 9
1 John 1:9 NKJV
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We: Elab He did not say if you, but if we.
Confess our sins: If we will confess our sins. Forgiveness comes as a result of true confession on the part of the one seeking forgiveness. Psalm 51: 2,3,12
Psalm 51:2 NKJV
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:3 NKJV
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me.
Psalm 51:12 NKJV
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins: God is faithful to his children. God will do all and exactly what he promised. He will forgive us if we confess our sins.
Why is God faithful? Because he is God, if he was unfaithful he would cease to be God.
Through His faithfulness he gives us.
Cleanse us from all unrighteousness:
Cleanse: To make clean by removing the filth.
Elab on this verse
VS 10
1 John 1:10 NKJV
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
Sin here is regarded as an act. Elab
Sin is a fact that we all have to face, and realize that we need God’s forgiveness.
