Scripture:
Hebrews 4:12–13 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
Introduction:
Introduction:
The Word to us is such a gift of God. I want to start first by answering the questions “What is the Word?”. Well we know according to John 1:1 “The Word is God.” Jesus Christ is the Word made manifest. The very word of life and bread of heaven sent to us. Yet, I believe this verse also is talking about the written word of God. The New testament uses the word Logos which means “Word” when referring to Jesus, and when referring to the Holy Scriptures. Notice it Mark 7:13 in talking about the Pharisees distorting the written commandment to honor Father. Jesus says “ thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” Jesus, even though he bears that title fully, he shares this title with the written words of scripture. So, when we appraoch this text, I want you not to seperate the two, but see them both together. Not to cast off Christ and only see the Scriptures. And not to cast off scriptures and this this is only meaning Christ. See the mysterious connection between the two, and I believe if you fight to orient your mind in this way, your faith will soar.
So for the sake of our time together today you will hear me refer to both. But let us first examine verse 12. Look at the claims the apostle is making. We will unpack and examine these claims together.
1. If the Word of God is Living, We must find our life in it
1. If the Word of God is Living, We must find our life in it
“For the Word of God is living”
The power of God is in The Word
We have seen over and over thus far an emphasis on Gods Word manifest, spoken to us, and now handed down to us.
Hebrews opens up with an emphasis on the Word of God
Hebrews 1:1–2 “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”
Hebrews tells us to listen to Gods Word
Hebrews 2:1 “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”
Hebrews shows us we have heard, what God has spoken through Scripture
Hebrews 2:6 “It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?”
The Life of the Christian is in the Word
2. If the Word of God is Active, we ought to let the Word do the Work
2. If the Word of God is Active, we ought to let the Word do the Work
“For the word of God is living and active.”
Intro: What does Active mean? Well that means that it is accomplishing something. Its doing something. And indeed it is the will of God to Do something in and through his Word. We see that he uses his word to Create. He says “Let there be light.” and there was light. He uses his Word to create Faith “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” And if you have faith in Jesus you are a product of the divine work of the Word. But in saying that the Word of God is active, the author is a few things about the Word, the holy Scriptures that we must see.
The Word of God does the Work of God
Look to Jesus as an example. He was the living Word of God and he worked the will of the Father
Gods Word Creates Faith
Gods Word Sanctifies Saints
John 17:17 “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
3. If the Word of God is sharpen than any weapon, we must kill our sin with it
3. If the Word of God is sharpen than any weapon, we must kill our sin with it
“Sharper than any two-edged sword Piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
It is a weapon against our unbelief
Acts 2:37 “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?””
4. If the Word of God is able to expose us, we ought to let the Word alone declare our State
4. If the Word of God is able to expose us, we ought to let the Word alone declare our State
“ And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.”
