Let not your hearts be troubled

Intro

The other day i was talking to my mother and she said that her work owed a woman $8,000. And i said what did she have to do to get it i bet that was a crazy lawsuit. She said no all she had to do was walk into her bosses office and say hey you owe me this much money.

Because them giving her the money was not a request it was a command. She knew it was possible for them to give her the money so she commanded that they give it to her

We hear the words of Jesus say take heart, we hear him say come to me all that are heavy laden, we hear him say do not be anxious, we here him say do not be troubled, we hear him say peace to you. And we foolishly act like that is any less of an authoritatively life giving command from the mouth of our savior than do not commit sexual immorality or murder. This is a serious attack from satan that will distract you and mislead you from the kingdom of God.

Bottom concern top stress

There is something i want to tell you today. The less you focus on delight with yourself and your surroundings and the more you delight in God, the more delighted you will be on your journey to eternal life.

English Standard Version Chapter 14

14 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Hope in Jesus Character

Resting in Jesus and not allowing my heart to be troubled sounds amazing but i dont know how to do it. Jesus is saying the first step in not allowing your heart to be troubled is to believe in God and believe also in him. Jesus is saying that believing in him and in the father leads to your heart not being troubled. So what does it look like to find rest by believing in God and in the son. It means remembering God’s never changing character and what he accomplished for you, what he is currently doing for you, and what He will eventually do for you.

Some of you may be thinking I know God loves me and there is trust in that. But there are plenty of people that have told me they love me and if God acts like them then i want no part. Because the people that told me they love me have left me in the past, they say mean things to me, they werent there for me when i needed them the most. DO NOT LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED. Believe in God and believe also in me. If God is powerful enough to create a perfect world that we have damaged by sin and love guilty sinners enough to send his only son to die for YOU on YOUR behalf, and promise to recreate this imperfect world into an eternal world where you can live forever then i promise you that he is powerful enough to love you despite what you or others think of you.

Notice that he says believe in the current tense. Be believing in me at all times.

Remember this, Not only did Jesus die for you 2000 years ago and not only will he bring you to his eternal kingdom in the future. But right now at this moment not only is he the charger that connect from the block to the phone making a way for us to send our prayers to God, but his sacrifice then is still paying for our sin now. He has never forgotten about you. Dwell on his sacrifice for you. Dwell on what he is doing for you right now. Dwell on who Jesus is. He is good and faithful. Faithful to the point of a cross.

But this is what is happening in your heart. You are not seeking to enjoy the Lord in what you do. So your heart has become a free for all for who is going to be the first person to claim it. And satan is sending everything he has to trouble you and discrouage you and lead you to finding enjoyment in decietful activities that turn your direction away from God. But if you would only understand what he did for you. And prevent your mind and heart from slipping into a love of the world then you not only would be satisfied in God but would be faithfully persuing him also

As i was making this sermon i was typing it out and when you fill up the line it moves everything to the next. Well I always capitalize the H in him when talking about God. Well i had missed one earlier in the sentence. And it was just a one line sentence. So i went back and changed the lower case h to an upper case h. When i did that it shifted the rest of the sentence over to the next line. And i thought what an amazing example of what making Jesus the Lord of our life actually does for us. When you understand the power, the might, the Glory of God and that he chooses to use all of the power that is available in the universe towards you, then everything else that could ever weigh you down or get in the way of you getting to heaven takes a backseat and it forced to gaze upon the glory of God also.

One of the most comforting phrases in this entire section is that Jesus is going to take us to a place that he has prepared for us. Youve learned about substitution either in math class or in sports, when you put your faith in Jesus you give him your sin and he gives you his perfect life. Jesus is telling you in this passage everything that is mine i am now sharing with you. My rightiousness the love my father has for me, hope for eternal life, even down to my home. Everything is shared with you. Do not let your hearts be troubled. We can quiet our noisy hearts with the reality that Jesus desires to share his dwelling place with you. Knowing that he not only loved me but right now in this moment he is loving me. But Andrew there are times when God feels distant from me. There are times that I am struggling and i dont see him, there are times when I am so overwhelmed i cant even function. “Where i am i desire for them to be also.” If you cannot find rest or peace in anything else i want you to remember this, when we were still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly.

Jesus is saying the world is troublesome but your spirituality is not something to be troubled by unless you just arent trying. If you are a child of God and are working to follow him then spirituality is not something you have to worry about.

I know some of you in here may be thinking this sounds wonderful. Because the sinless savior died my sinful soul is now set free, God the just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me.

But thats not all of you. You are sitting there right now and this is going in one ear and out the other. Let me tell you why thats happening, it could be one of two things. First you dont believe that heaven is real. You may believe that the Bible is true and the Bible teaches that heaven is a real place. But how are you just supposed to believe a book that says there is an eternal destination for you when you die.

Heaven is not a figment of your imagination or a state of mind that you can achieve. Heaven is a place that we long for and have hope that one day we will shed our earthly bodies and go to a place that was made specifically for us to dwell with the one who gave himself for us.

The other reason this may not mean anything to you is because your apetite has been spoiled by the things of this world.

There is a place in Milbrook called catfish house and when you sit down they put out this huge spread before you with coleslaw and beans and hushpuppies. And they make the apetizer so great that always have to leave with a to go plate for your main meal.

There are no to go plates for the things of this world. If you want to follow Jesus then one of the first things you will have to do its not let your heart be troubled by the wordly pleasures that are getting in the way of your relationship with God.

Is there a sin that you have never committed to getting out of your life. Is there a show that speaks in a way or influences you in a way that turns you into someone you know you shouldnt be. Has your phone turned into your god and prevented you from working towards strengthening your relationship with the true god.

DO NOT LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED. Says Jesus if you are struggling with these things. Because Jesus is powerful enough and capable of walking with you through these battles

Hope in the Holy Spirit

One quick thing i wanted to touch on was the greatness of us having the Holy Spirit. Isnt it hard to believe when Jesus says that it is better for him to go away. Because now you are not dweling with Jesus, if you put your faith and trust in him then he is dwelling in you. And molding you and changing you from the inside out. He who is faithful is working in you.

One of the best most comforting verses in this whole passage in verse 6. Can we ever have enough reminders that Jesus is everything. Your time with him will never be wasted, your sacrifices for him will never be wasted, your life will never be wasted. Do not let your hearts be troubled, why because i am the way the truth and the life, no one can come to the father except through me what does that mean hey want to see the father follow me and ill get you there. Not be your works but by what i did for you

Its no wonder some of us dont want to spend eternity with Jesus since we dont take the time here on earth to discover what an inexhaustibly delightful satisfying magnificent savior he is

With the character of Jesus perpetually on our mind, and our devotion to Christ at all times, we are able to have the waters of our heart calmed by the one who created them in the first place.

Conclusion
