Intro

Last week we concluded through chapter 5...
At the conclusion of chapter 5, we have Moses complaining to God, blaming God and questioning Him...
At the beginning of chapter 6, we see some repetitive issues with Moses...
Vs. 1 - God - “Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh” - by a strong hand
Vs. 2 - “I am the LORD”
Vs. 4 - “I gave the promise of the land to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
Vs. 5 - “I heard the groaning of Israel.”
Something special happens in verses 6 and 7:
Exodus 6:6–7 KJV 1900
6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: 7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
It would seem like a “no duh” type moment, but not to Israel...
This is the first time that God tells Israel that he is establishing them as His own...
Other times he did to Abraham and Moses, but now directly to Israel for the first time...
Today, we are working through chapter 6 in a non-conventional way...
We are going to talk about things going back to chapter 1, but look at the whole of chapters 1 - 6 and seeing God’s sovereign plan be accomplished...
Note about the study today:
*As God works His sovereign will in our lives, it’s important to note - it’s not all about us...
When things happen in our lives, we tend to focus on:
God’s provision for me
God’s growth in me
God’s will done through me
But maybe we should consider when events in our life take place, it may be:
About someone else’s provision
Someone else’s growth
God’s will being accomplished in someone else’s life
**It’s not all about me**
I find this very theme in our study of the life of Moses...
There are 4 main groups I see this in throughout these studies:
Moses
Aaron
Pharaoh
The Israelites
The Egyptians
God was going to accomplish something through each of these groups...
All needed preparation and working through in order to accomplish His will...
In each of these 5 groups, God held a promise, purpose and preparation in each:
Important: God’s promises always connect to His purpose, and His purpose is carried out through preparation...

1. Moses

a. The Promise to Moses
God’s Presence, Power and Authority
Exodus 3:12 KJV 1900
12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
Exodus 4:12 KJV 1900
12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
Exodus 4:17 KJV 1900
17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.
Exodus 6:1 KJV 1900
1 Then the Lord said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.
b. The Purpose of Moses
To be God’s chosen deliver for the nation of Israel
Exodus 6:13 KJV 1900
13 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
c. The Preparation of Moses
Spared as a baby (to the credit of Jochebed, yet also it was a trial for her… but the end working would be for Moses and the Children of Israel)
Raised in Pharaoh’s house (to the trial of Moses, yet the working for the Children of Israel)
Learned the culture of Egypt
Witnessed the affliction of his people (to the detriment of the people of Israel, yet for the growth of Moses)
Found Zipporah
Shepherded a flock (for the benefit of Jethro, yet the growth of Moses)
Spoken to by God
Shown signs (for the growth of Moses to be used for the Children of Israel)

2. Aaron

a. The Promise to Aaron
Helper to Moses
Exodus 4:14–16 KJV 1900
14 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.
b. The Purpose of Aaron
To be Moses’ spokesman and co-laborer
(God said he would be the mouth for Moses)
(later he will hold the hands of Moses)
c. The Preparation of Aaron
Exodus 4:27 KJV 1900
27 And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.
What God would do to or through Aaron was not always just for Aaron’s growth...
God’s use of us sometimes means our trials or successes for God’s use in someone else
So the trial you are going through, may be for you and God’s perfecting in you...
It could be for someone else who needs to watch you go through the trial and how you handle it with the Lord for THEIR growth...
All in all, the purpose is God’s perfect plan and your involvement in that plan...

3. Pharaoh

a. The Promise about Pharaoh
Exodus 4:21 KJV 1900
21 And the Lord said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.
Exodus 7:3–5 KJV 1900
3 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. 5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
It was Pharaoh’s hard heart that would lead to God’s signs, wonders and judgements, which would lead to the EGYPTIANS KNOWING that God is God… Yet the beneficiary is the children of Israel who gets delivered...
b. The Purpose of Pharaoh
To resist God...
Bring difficulty in the life of Moses and Israel
For Moses and Israel to believe in the power of God
God didn’t want Pharaoh to be the enemy of Israel and have a hard heart...
But He knew Pharaoh WOULD be the enemy of Israel and have a hard heart...
So God can use even the rebellion of the wicked for His working...
c. The Preparation of Pharaoh
Exodus 1:9–14 KJV 1900
9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. 11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
It is not God’s will for any person to sin or do wrong...
Yet even when we sin and do wrong, God can use that for His good...
Romans 8:28 KJV 1900
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Genesis 50:20 KJV 1900
20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

4. The Israelites

a. The Promise to Israel
Exodus 6:6–8 KJV 1900
6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: 7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the Lord.
Look at all of the “I will’s”
Bring you out from your burden of the Egyptians
Rid you out of their bondgage
Redeem you with a stretched out arm
Make you my people
Be your God
Bring you unto the land
Give you for an heritage
b. The Purpose of Israel
To be God’s chosen people
To be testimony of God’s power
To show the world who God is
c. The Preparation of
Became a great nation under affliction
Exodus 1:7 KJV 1900
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Exodus 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
2. Cried out to God in their bondage and affliction
Exodus 2:23–25 KJV 1900
23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
The bondage Israel faced was good for God’s will...
It drew them to God in tears and affliction...
3. Witnessed the signs by Moses and Aaron for temporal belief
Exodus 4:30–31 KJV 1900
30 And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
These signs proved to have multifaceted layers of benefit...
It caused Moses and Aaron to believe in the power of God...
It caused the Israelites to believe in the power of God...

5. The Egyptians

a. The Promise to the Egyptians
Israel would receive favor from them
Exodus 3:21 KJV 1900
21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty:
2. They shall know who God is
Exodus 7:5 KJV 1900
5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
b. The Purpose of the Egyptians
God would use them to send out Israel full
to afflict Israel
To protect and raise Moses (Pharaoh’s daughter)
Conclusion:
As you can see, God’s perfect sovereign will is on great display in these first several chapters of Exodus...
Just the way God used all these different people groups to effectively accomplish His perfect will...
Knowing that one persons trial was another’s spiritual growth...
One person’s sin was an opportunity for God’s judgement...
What God is doing to or through you may not just be about you...
