A Sermon on 1 Peter 2:1-5, 9-10

Big Idea:

God forms us into His abundant spiritual family, where we grow together, serve together, and shine together as His chosen people.

Text: 1 Peter 2:1-5, 9-10 (ESV)

"So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you also like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ... But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy."

Exegetical Context

Peter writes to believers scattered across Asia Minor who were facing persecution and felt displaced from society. Using powerful metaphors of family, building, and priesthood, Peter reminds them of their true identity in Christ. The passage bridges from personal spiritual growth (verses 1-3) to corporate identity (verses 4-5) to their mission in the world (verses 9-10).
The Greek word for "people" (laos) in verse 10 is the same word used for God's covenant people throughout the Old Testament, emphasizing continuity with God's redemptive plan while showing its expansion to include Gentile believers.

Our Family Grows Together in Truth

Based on 1 Peter 2:1-3
Peter begins with a call to spiritual maturity that happens in community. The verb tenses indicate both a decisive action (putting away sins) and an ongoing process (longing for spiritual milk).

A. We Must Remove What Divides Our Family

The five sins listed—malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander—all destroy relationships and hinder spiritual growth. These aren't just personal failings; they're family destroyers.
(Greek: ) - deliberate ill will toward othersMalicekakia
() - intentional misleading or trickeryDeceitdolos
() - wearing masks, being inauthenticHypocrisyhypokrisis
() - resentment over others' blessingsEnvyphthonos
() - speaking against others destructivelySlanderkatalalia
Supporting Scripture: Ephesians 4:31-32 - "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

B. We Must Crave What Builds Our Family

The image of "newborn infants" longing for milk illustrates the intensity of desire we should have for God's Word. The Greek word epipotheo suggests an earnest longing, like homesickness.
"Pure spiritual milk" refers to the unadulterated Word of God that nourishes spiritual growth. The phrase "if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good" echoes Psalm 34:8 and implies that genuine believers will naturally hunger for more of God.
Supporting Scripture: Psalm 119:103 - "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!"

Our Family Builds Together in Service

Based on 1 Peter 2:4-5
Peter shifts from individual growth to corporate identity, using architectural metaphors to describe the church as God's building project.

A. Christ Is Our Family's Foundation Stone

Jesus is called the "living stone"—a paradox that emphasizes both His divine nature (living) and His role as foundation (stone). Though "rejected by men," He is "chosen and precious" to God. The Greek word eklektos (chosen) emphasizes divine selection and purpose.
This rejection-to-exaltation pattern becomes the model for believers who also face rejection by the world but are precious to God.
Supporting Scripture: Isaiah 28:16 - "Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation."

B. We Are Our Family's Building Stones

Believers are "living stones" being "built up" (Greek: oikodomeo) into a "spiritual house." This isn't a static structure but a living, growing organism. Each believer is both a stone in the building and a priest serving in the temple.
The purpose is clear: "to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." Under the New Covenant, all believers have direct access to God and the responsibility to offer spiritual worship.
Supporting Scripture: Romans 12:1 - "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship."

Our Family Shines Together in Mission

Based on 1 Peter 2:9-10
Peter concludes with four magnificent titles that define the church's identity and mission in the world.

A. We Share an Incredible Family Identity

Four titles describe our corporate identity:
(Greek: ) - We belong to God's special lineage"Chosen race"genos eklekton
- We have both authority (royal) and access (priesthood)"Royal priesthood"
- We are set apart as God's distinct people"Holy nation"
- We are God's treasured possession"People for his own possession"
These titles, drawn from Exodus 19:5-6, show that the church inherits the promises given to Israel, creating a new multinational people of God.
Supporting Scripture: Exodus 19:5-6 - "You shall be my treasured possession among all peoples... and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

B. We Have an Important Family Mission

Our identity leads to mission: "that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
The word "proclaim" (Greek: exangello) means to announce or declare publicly. "Excellencies" (arete) refers to God's virtues, mighty deeds, and wonderful works. Our mission is to be living advertisements of God's character and grace.
Supporting Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16 - "You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

C. We Celebrate an Amazing Family Transformation

Verse 10 provides a before-and-after picture using language from Hosea 1:6, 9 and 2:23:
"Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people"
"Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy"
This transformation applies especially to Gentile believers who were once outside God's covenant family but are now fully included through Christ's work.

Living as Our Abundant Family

Personal Application:

Examine your relationships: Are you contributing to family unity by putting away malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander? What specific relationship needs healing?
Evaluate your spiritual appetite: Do you crave God's Word like a newborn craves milk? When did you last feel genuinely excited about studying Scripture?
Embrace your priestly calling: How are you offering spiritual sacrifices through worship, service, and evangelism? What gifts has God given you to build up the family?
Live your identity: When others look at your life, do they see evidence that you belong to a "chosen race" and "royal priesthood"? How does your daily conduct proclaim God's excellencies?

Corporate Application:

As a church family, we must:
by addressing conflicts with grace and truth
Prioritize unity
through biblical teaching and discipleship
Foster spiritual growth
by being witnesses in our community
Engage in mission
by living as people transformed by God's mercy
Celebrate our identity

The Promise:

Remember, you are not just scattered individuals trying to make it through life. You are part of God's abundant family—chosen, beloved, and equipped for His purposes. In a world that often leaves people feeling isolated and insignificant, the church offers something revolutionary: a family where everyone belongs, everyone grows, everyone serves, and everyone shines.
Let us live worthy of this calling, building each other up as living stones in God's great spiritual house, proclaiming His excellencies to a world that desperately needs to see His marvelous light.
Amen.
