Welcome to Vertical Church
We worship the biblical Jesus
We believe that God is sovereign and out of a sinful world He calls lost sinners to faith and repentance by giving them a new heart
We believe that salvation is only by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone
We believe that the gospel must personally be received, that t each person must believe on the Lord jesus Christ to be saved, that each person must confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that Jesus rose from the dead to be saved.
We believe that the Bible is the word of God and that it reveals who the true God is and how true salvation is received by faith in jesus Christ
Let us worship God
Call to Worship - Psalm 2
1 Why do the nations rage And the peoples meditate on a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against Yahweh and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord mocks them. 5 Then He speaks to them in His anger And terrifies them in His fury, saying, 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” 7 “I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth as Your possession. 9 ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like a potter’s vessel.’” 10 So now, O kings, show insight; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11 Serve Yahweh with fear And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
Scripture Reading - Romans 12:17-21
17 Never paying back evil for evil to anyone, respecting what is good in the sight of all men, 18 if possible, so far as it depends on you, being at peace with all men, 19 never taking your own revenge, beloved—instead leave room for the wrath of God. For it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Introduction: Responding to an Angry World
“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace
Because he trusts in You.
I’ve been watching videos where the person speaking appeals to Christians to live and act like Jesus. You’d think this was something good.
But it soon becomes obvious that these speakers have never studied the life of and teachings of Jesus. Or they twist the words and actions of Jesus.
Jesus is not the God of the New Testament. He is the eternal God of the Old and New Testaments - He is holy, holy, holy
When the religious leaders brought the woman caught in adultery he showed grace and mercy
But when he refused to have her stoned, he did not say go back to your lifestyle, he said go and sin no more
He spoke out against sexual sin, he spoke out against corruption and the idolatry of money and possessions
However, he also confronted hypocrisy and false teaching.
The apostle Paul spoke the words of Jesus when he said, it is better to give than to receive.
But he also said that if a man does not work he should not eat.
He gave rules on who could receive the benevolence of the church and who needed to work and contribute to the good of the community
And he definitely spoke out against drunkenness, greed, and sexual immorality
What has developed in or age is a battle against a cultural Christianity that wants love and justice but rejects Biblical love and biblical justice. It is a cultural and non biblical Christianity that accepts the morals and values of the world. When Jesus said some out from the world and be separate, this new Christianity says to accept the values of the world. When the apostles taught that we are not love the world, many people who call themselves Christian say to follow the values of the world.
This was seen this past week when a young 31 year old husband and father of two was murdered because he would go onto college campuses and share his faith and speak out against abortion.
The way he would do this was to set up a place to speak with a sign that read, Prove me wrong. Rather than approach unwilling participants, young adults would stand in line for a chance to try to prove that his beliefs were incorrect.
Often he was falsely accused, and when asked, time and again they would admit that their accusations were based on false information and outright lies
Thousands of young people from all backgrounds and cultures followed him and supported him.
But a few days ago, one person ended his life while he was answering a question about gun violence.
And now many are Christians are asking, how should we respond?
(1) Look to the example of Christ
Jesus - Father forgive them
Stephen - Forgive them
(2) Look to the words of Christ
They hated me, they persecuted me, they will also hate and persecute you
All those who are godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution
The evil of the world stands against the things of God
Racism is wrong, crime is wrong. But the world is now calling evil good and good evil
(3) Look to the motives of the world
They were jealous of Jesus. Out of envy they hated Jesus
The blood cries out
(4) Look to the actions of the world
Three responses: Hate and anger and false accusations
The accusations against the Lord Jesus
They said he was Demonic, They said he would destroy, the false witnesses said he blasphemed God
I have watched several interviews of the young man who was murdered and accusations were made but no facts were ever given
The result was sinful anger
Anger is a secondary emotion - hate and jealousy and a desire to control are often the primary emotions
And so, should Christians resort to anger?
17 Never paying back evil for evil to anyone, respecting what is good in the sight of all men, 18 if possible, so far as it depends on you, being at peace with all men, 19 never taking your own revenge, beloved—instead leave room for the wrath of God. For it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
When the world claims to see injustice there are fires, and looting, and mass violence.
What we have seen the last few days are tears and financial support and groups gathered for prayer
There is a huge difference between seeking justice and seeking revenge
What are the principles that should guide true followers of Christ
Be careful of false information
The first to present his case
17 The first to plead his case seems right, Until another comes and examines him.
We do not seek revenge
17 Never paying back evil for evil to anyone, respecting what is good in the sight of all men,
We do not ever seek compromise
4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world sets himself as an enemy of God.
We seek first the kingdom of God
33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not from here.”
Now the God who is mighty,
the Lamb who is worthy,
and the Spirit who is near, fortify
you to live faithfully in these days
and all the days until Jesus comes.
Amen.
