How would you categorize the people that you spend time with on a day to day basis?
Influence goes both ways. There is a balance between who we influence as well as who influences us.
Proverbs 12:26 ESV
One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
Those who we associate with will contribute a great deal to who we are as people.
Proverbs 1:10–19 ESV
My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse”— my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird, but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors.
Sinners. walk in the way with them.
10, invitation. 11-14 expansion on it
15, warning. 16-19 expansion on it
Do those that we hand around submit to the law of God?
Proverbs 24:1–2 ESV
Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, for their hearts devise violence, and their lips talk of trouble.
Envy has a tendency to breed the desire to be with them.
The tie between the heart and the lips.
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Walks with = Companion
These have consequences for both now as well as the future.
Proverbs 22:24–25 ESV
Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Make friendship = go with
Man given to anger = Wrathful man
There is a whole lot of danger in learning the ways of those who we spend significant time with.
Proverbs 23:19–21 ESV
Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.
Those who do not have self-control. The pursuit without control of anything will result in poverty for a person.
Luke 15, the prodigal son.
Proverbs 28:7 ESV
The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.
Proverbs 29:3 ESV
He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
Those who give in to their own desires will be a shame to those who have raised them. It is not wise to give in to those desires. Instead, practicing wisdom leads to a life of discipline.
Proverbs 24:21–22 ESV
My son, fear the Lord and the king, and do not join with those who do otherwise, for disaster will arise suddenly from them, and who knows the ruin that will come from them both?
Do not join with those who do not have a healthy fear of the Lord and the king.
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
