Guiding Principles in Worship

沖縄に住んでいると、毎日文化の違いを体験します。夕食で塩を渡す方法や、ご飯を別々の茶碗で出すか、すべて混ぜて一緒にするかなど、それぞれの文化には物事を違った方法で行う理由があります。これらの違いは、私たちの習慣を形作る根本的な文化的考え方から生まれています。

同じ原則が教会にも当てはまります。各会衆には独自の礼拝アプローチがあり、それは多くの場合、「なぜそのようにするのか？」という質問に答える神学的基礎に根ざしています。カルバリーチャペル読谷では、私たちの礼拝スタイルは、聖書の理解から引き出された、神がどのように礼拝されるべきかについての3つの重要な信念から生まれています。

礼拝は霊的であるべき

コロサイ3章16節は、「キリストの言葉があなたがたの内に豊かに宿り、知恵を尽くして互いに教え、互いに戒め、詩編と賛美と霊的な歌とにより、感謝して心から神をほめたたえなさい」と私たちに勧めています。私たちは神への礼拝は霊的であるべきであり、それは聖霊の導きに対して柔軟で従順であることを意味すると信じています。

聖書が「霊的」について語る時、それは聖霊によって導かれることを指します。ガラテヤ5章で、パウロは信者が御霊によって歩み、霊的な実を結ぶことを描いています。6章では、「霊的」な人々が他の人を回復するよう呼んでいます—これは聖霊の指導の下を歩んでいる人々を指しています。

新型コロナウイルスのパンデミック中、消毒用アルコールが不足した時に急いで手に入れようとしたことを多くの人が覚えているでしょう。ある人は、工場から無料の消毒用アルコールを集めるために古い水のボトルを持参したものの、容器が時間と共にもろくなっていたため、液体が漏れ出してしまった話を分かち合いました。古い容器が新しい内容物を保持できなかったため、機会が無駄になったのです。

同様に、私たちが聖霊の御業を柔軟性のない習慣に押し込めようとする時、主が成し遂げたいことを見逃す危険があります。カルバリーチャペルでは「柔軟な者は幸いです。なぜなら砕かれることがないからです」と言います。これは聖書に反する教えを受け入れることを意味するのではなく、神が私たちの間でどのように働かれるかに対して心を開いていることです。

礼拝は感動的であるべき

私たちは礼拝は感動的であるべきだと信じており、だからこそ礼拝で音楽に大きな場所を与えています。感動的とは、私たちの感情を動かし、心をかき立てるもの—私たちを持ち上げ、毎日を向き合う希望を与えるものを意味します。

多くの人がソーシャルメディアで感動的な引用を探し、ベッドから出るだけの動機を見つけようとします。これらは一時的な励ましを提供するかもしれませんが、私たちは一瞬を超えて続くより深い感動が必要です。

イエスはこのより深い感動を提供してくださいます。主は私たちを決して離れず、見捨てないと約束し、霊的な渇きに生ける水を、疲れに休息を提供してくださいます。主の希望は永遠まで続きます。

音楽は私たちの礼拝でこの感動の手段として働きます。詩編95編は私たちに「主に向かって歌い」「救いの岩に向かって喜びの声をあげる」よう呼んでいます。一緒にイエスへの賛美を歌う時、私たちは主に目を向けるよう感動を受けます。それは主を信頼することを選ぶもう一つの方法です。

私たちが一緒に約30分間歌うのは、神の前で私たちの心と思いを正しく位置づけたいからです。これは単に歌うことを楽しんでいるからではなく、礼拝が私たちをイエスに目を向けさせ、主の価値を認識させるよう感動を与えるからです。

礼拝は知的であるべき

最後に、私たちは礼拝は知的であるべきだと信じており、だからこそ私たちの礼拝は神の言葉の教えを重視しています。イエスはヨハネ4章23-24節で、真の礼拝者は「霊と真理をもって父を礼拝する」と言われました。

礼拝は私たちの感情と心の両方に関わります。海の近くの家を買う前に洪水地域や緊急計画を調査して嵐の間に安心を得るように、私たちは人生の挑戦を乗り越えるために真理によって心を新たにする必要があります。

ローマ12章1-2節は、私たちが生きた供え物として自分自身を捧げ、「心を新たにして変えられる」ようにと呼んでいます。私たちは皆、私たちを害する可能性のある不健全な思考パターンや非聖書的な視点を持っています。神は私たちの心を主の真理によって新たにしたいと願っておられます。

適用は簡単です：礼拝のために集まる時、キリストを求め、主に近づく機会を取ってください。賛美の間は、言葉を意味深く受け取ってください。神の言葉を聞いている間は、主があなたに個人的に語ってくださるよう祈ってください。あなたが抱えているどんな重荷でも持参し、イエスに渡してください。祈りが必要な時は、他の人に祈りを求めることをためらわないでください。

Living in Okinawa, we experience cultural differences daily. Whether it's how we pass the salt at dinner or serve rice in separate bowls versus mixing it together, each culture has reasons for doing things differently. These differences stem from underlying cultural mindsets that shape our practices.

The same principle applies to churches. Each congregation has its own approach to worship, often rooted in theological foundations that answer the question: "Why do you do it that way?" At Calvary Chapel Yomitan, our worship style flows from three key beliefs about how God should be worshipped, drawn from our understanding of Scripture.

Worship Should Be Spiritual

Colossians 3:16 encourages us to "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God." We believe worship of God should be spiritual, which means remaining flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

When the Bible speaks of being "spiritual," it refers to being led by the Holy Spirit. In Galatians 5, Paul describes believers walking by the Spirit and producing spiritual fruit. In chapter 6, he calls those who are "spiritual" to help restore others—referring to those walking under the Holy Spirit's guidance.

Jesus taught this principle in Mark 2, saying that new wine requires fresh wineskins. As the Holy Spirit continues His work, we must remain flexible to His leading rather than forcing His work into old routines or rigid traditions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us remember rushing to get sanitizing alcohol when it became scarce. One person shared how they grabbed an old water bottle to collect free sanitizing alcohol from a factory, only to watch it leak out because the container had become brittle over time. The opportunity was wasted because the old container couldn't hold the new contents.

Similarly, when we try to force the Holy Spirit's work into inflexible routines, we risk missing what He wants to accomplish. At Calvary Chapel, we say "blessed are the flexible, because they will not be broken." This doesn't mean accepting teachings that contradict Scripture, but rather staying open to how God might work among us.

Worship Should Be Inspirational

We believe worship should be inspirational, which is why we give great place to music in our services. Inspirational means something that moves our emotions and stirs our hearts—something that lifts us up and gives us hope to face each day.

Many people search for inspirational quotes on social media to find enough motivation just to get out of bed. While these may provide temporary encouragement, we need deeper inspiration that lasts beyond a moment.

Jesus offers this deeper inspiration. He promises to never leave or forsake us, to provide living water for our spiritual thirst, and rest for our weariness. His hope extends for eternity.

Music serves as a vehicle for this inspiration in our worship. Psalm 95 calls us to "sing to the Lord" and "make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation." When we sing praises to Jesus together, we're inspired to put our eyes on Him, which is another way of choosing to trust Him.

We spend about thirty minutes singing together because we want our minds and hearts positioned correctly before God. This isn't just because we enjoy singing, but because worship inspires us to turn our eyes to Jesus and recognize His worthiness.

Worship Should Be Intelligent

Finally, we believe worship should be intelligent, which is why our services emphasize teaching God's Word. Jesus said in John 4:23-24 that true worshipers "will worship the Father in spirit and in truth."

Worship engages both our emotions and our minds. Just as someone might research flood zones and emergency plans before buying a house near the ocean to have peace of mind during storms, we need our minds renewed by truth to navigate life's challenges.

Romans 12:1-2 calls us to present ourselves as living sacrifices and "be transformed by the renewal of your mind." We all carry unhealthy thought patterns and unbiblical perspectives that can harm us. God wants to renew our minds with His truth.

Through consistent teaching of Scripture, we learn more about the Lord's character and how He responds to different situations. This knowledge enables us to trust Him more deeply when storms arise in our lives. The goal isn't merely accumulating Bible knowledge, but knowing God more personally so we can trust Him more completely.

Drawing Near Through Worship

These three elements—spiritual, inspirational, and intelligent worship—work together to help us trust Jesus more personally. When we gather for corporate worship, we have a special opportunity as a community to set our eyes on Him together.

The application is simple: when we gather to worship, take the opportunity to seek and draw near to Christ. During singing, engage meaningfully with the words. While listening to God's Word, pray for the Lord to speak personally to you. Bring whatever burdens you're carrying and give them to Jesus. Don't hesitate to ask others for prayer when you need it.

Our Sunday morning gatherings provide a unique time to personally seek the Lord and draw near to Him. Each week we come with different circumstances—bring those to Jesus and worship Him. Don't let these opportunities be wasted, but use them to grow deeper in your relationship with the One who is worthy of all our worship.
