Rescue-Part 2
We left off last time at
Giving thanks to God the Father, who qualified us to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.
Where we left off sets us up for the next section, which is so rich, it is difficult to know where to begin…
Let’s take a look at our section
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have price of liberation, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation: for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The imagery that Paul uses is amazing:
As the previous verse indicated, God qualified us to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.
This concept is really important
Otherwise, the ones who are qualified to share in light
Are left in the domain of darkness
The idea of rescue from the domain of darkness
Domain is not a kingdom
It is legal jurisdiction
But the transfer is to a kingdom
And that kingdom is of a beloved Son
The price of liberation (redeem)
The idea here is the fee paid to purchase a captured person from the enemy
In this case, the fee paid is the forgiveness of sins
The concept is important because God is not going to dwell in a person only to have that person be subject to another domain.
The transfer is going to be official
Psalm 87:5–6 (Hebrew numbering): “And of Zion it shall be said, ‘This one and that one were born in her’; for the Most High himself will establish her. The LORD records as he registers the peoples, ‘This one was born there.’”
***NEXT…
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation: for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Quite a statement Paul is making
There are two things here that I want to concentrate on:
Second thing first, The firstborn of all creation
First thing, second, the image of the invisible God
The image of God
How are we to be the image of God
We are rescued because the Image of God does not belong in the domain of darkness
We belong in the Kingdom of Light
Our rescue leads to others being rescued
We call that the gospel
