How we see the world will determine how we live in it. In John 16: 16–33, the disciples are perplexed by Jesus’ words about not seeing Him and then seeing Him again. They try to reason it out on their own, forgetting that the things of God are not meant to be understood apart from Him. Jesus is teaching them that physical sight will fade, but spiritual sight through the Holy Spirit will give them lasting joy. Though sorrow is real, it is temporary, like labor pains that give way to joy. The promise of verse 22 is clear: “Your joy no one will take from you.” In Christ, we have direct access to the Father, the privilege of prayer, and the assurance that even in tribulation we can have peace, for Jesus has overcome the world.
