Jesus Baptized

As we continue through the Bible this year
We have come to sort of the start of Jesus’s earthly ministry
We know that Jesus was born of a virgin
That his parents forgot him or left him in the temple when he was 12
And then they next part is the beginning of his earthly ministry
From birth to 12 we don’t know anything that went on other than he was presented at the temple shortly after birth and then they fled to Egypt to live
From 12 to Baptism we don’t know much if anything again other than
52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
And then we go right into baptism of Jesus
It should be noted that John was the fulfillment of the prophecy in the Old Testament
5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6 “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”
John is born and does just that
John is also intrustmentaly in baptism in that He is the one who baptizes Jesus
13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John. 14 “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb. 16 “And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 “It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
This is what the angel said to John’s dad before He was born
That he would be the one preparing the way of Christ
So yes we don’t know what Jesus was doing before He started His public ministry but we do know that John His cousin was doing what he was called to do
He was preparing the way for the coming savior
And when it was time for Jesus to come foward into the spot light
John was there to tell everyone who Jesus is
John also taught baptism as well
When being questioned about his own teachings
John answered with this
14 Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, “And what about us, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.” 15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, 16 John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John baptizes with water
But one is coming
PSST its Jesus
Jesus is coming and he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
See John baptized with water because he wasn’t God and couldn’t impart the Holy Spirit to us
Essentially John’s baptism of water is just what ours is only its on the other side of the cross and grave
John’s baptism of water was essentially to clean the sin off you
That you are going to follow after God
25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
When the nation of Israel was gathered back
God would sprinkle them with water
To show them clean
Like the Priests throughout the Old Testament would have to wash before entering into the Holy of Holies
Up to this point with John and through the Old Testament sprinkling was just that
sprinkling you with some water
Washing off the outside
Then Jesus comes
Baptism sort of changes at that point
Jesus comes and is baptized
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
But Jesus wasn’t baptized to be saved
So just like today baptism does not save you
There are some churches and denominations that teach and preach you are only saved if you are baptized or salvation is completed if you are baptized
That is a lie because then why was Jesus baptized because he didn’t need to be saved
So baptism does not save and even today most baptisms don’t even really clean you on the outside
One we don’t want you using soap and we don’t have that much time
But Baptism is done to be obedient to what Christ said
To follow Jesus in believers baptism
is maybe a term you have heard said in church
Believers Baptism is in the Southern Baptist Convention Baptist Faith and Message 2000
“Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord’s Supper.”
Baptism was done after someone had repented of their sin and trusted in Christ to be Lord of their life
And it is ceremonially
Essentially church Baptism is an outward expression of what has happened on the inside of someone's heart
That is why it is done after salvation
It expresses ones commitment to follow after Jesus
As well as the decision they made in salvation
That they are dying to their sin
See Jesus came to set you and I free from sin
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Because as a believer Jesus has dealt with the sin in your life
Then Why should we go on sinning
NO
Because by accepting the free gift of salvation we have said we will die to sin
Which means that self that used to be a slave to sin and go about sinning has now died
We illustrate this part really good with a baptism
Paul explains this as we continue in Romans
3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
If you have accepted the free gift of salvation you are dying to your old self
If you have died with the old self like Jesus died on teh cross then you will surely live because Christ came to back to life
Paul says if you repent of your sin and trust in Jesus you will be saved
If you are saved you should follow Christ in believers baptism
meaning you should be baptized
You don’t need to be baptized to be saved but if you refuse to be baptized after you have been saved I question your salvation because baptism is an act of obedience
In the Great Commission we are to go to the nations and sharing the Gospel and baptizing them
So if you after salvation refuse to be baptized then I question your salvation
But baptism as we have said is done after salvation and is a reflection of what has happened on the inside of your heart
Like in Romans
Buried with Christ
When we lay you down in the tub that is to signify you have died and are burried
The Old has died and the new has come back to life
When we raise you up out of the water
It is to signify you have raise with Christ
Because if you have died with Christ then surely you have raised with Christ
Church that is the beautiful thing about salvation is
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
The same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now dwells in you that is the dying to the flesh, dying to the old self
But being raised up with Christ in the new life
All that is very much illustrated in baptism
Baptism is an outward expression of what has happened on the inside of your heart
And church we are to are to confess what has happened to us
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
When we get baptized
We are confessing our new relationship to the world
We are illustrating physically the decision we have made in our heart and using our words and actions to share with people what happen
What an awesome expression to share with people what has happened on the inside of our heart
So as we come to a close this morning
We will invite you to respond this morning
As the Band comes up
Maybe you are here this morning and do not know Jesus personally
I would invite you this morning to speak with someone about salvation
Or maybe there is another decision you need to make
Maybe its one of church membership or one od being baptism
You are inviting to come up and speak with someone
Or maybe you just need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
