Micah 5:2-9
Micah 5:2-9
But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, Though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Therefore will he give them up, Until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: Then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, In the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; And they shall abide: For now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
And this man shall be the peace, When the Assyrian shall come into our land: And when he shall tread in our palaces, Then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, And eight principal men.
And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, And the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: Thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, When he cometh into our land, And when he treadeth within our borders.
And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people As a dew from the Lord, As the showers upon the grass, That tarrieth not for man, Nor waiteth for the sons of men.
And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people As a lion among the beasts of the forest, As a young lion among the flocks of sheep: Who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, And none can deliver.
Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, And all thine enemies shall be cut off.
Last week our focus revealed that the King of Israel would one day come again! He will redeem Israel through the lineage of David in Bethlehem (“House of Bread”) Ephrathah (“fruitful”)!
This location is five miles south of Jerusalem in the Judaen hill country!
Why is this so important?
Scripture teaches us that Bethlehem Ephrathah was the birthplace of two famous people! Two of God’s anointed ones!
1 Samuel 17:12“Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years.”
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
King David was born in Ephrathite of Bethlethem-judah!
Now when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
Now Thee Anointed One of the Lord Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem of Judaea!
What will the King of the World Promise God’s People?
The Ancient of Days “the Messiah” will Shepherd the People of Israel and be the Righteous Judge of all the nations.
Before ruling from the “New Jerusalem” He will “give them up!” Meaning He will abandon the Israelites until their time of suffering is over.
Micah 5:3 “Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel.” Yes, He will rule, only when their time of suffering is at it’s climax!
The period of anguish - is the period of labor pains. They will go through the scattering around the world, trials, trouble, then the Messiah will gather and lead God’s people back to Himself. The phrase shall return indicates for us that true repentance is in view!
His Shepherding “will be great unto the ends of the earth” - I believe all the nations of the earth will submit to the Messiah’s authority.
And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, In the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; And they shall abide: For now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
What is the result of God’s perfect shepherding?
Peace! Micah 4:3–4 “He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.”
Eventual defeat of the enemy! (vs. 5b-6) Micah 5:5-6
Enemy conquered! Notice again a prophetic note. “Assyrian” named in Jewish history defeated Israel. So what is the explanation?
The Assyrians is another way of saying the enemies of God. Mostlikely the “enemy” in the “lastdays.” Zech 10:10-11; 12:9; 14:1-3. Wiersbe notation (page 397).
The phrase “seven shepherds and eight principled leaders” – is man’s way of thinking verse God’s. Man will look to these leaders.
But God will allow the enemy to attack, and God will allow these leaders to rise up against the enemies of God. God will be the deliverer of all the enemies of God.
d. The blessings given to the remnant!
1. He will destroy your chariots- Yahweh will remove all instruments of war and perfect peace will be in it’s place!
2. “The remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.” (vs. 7)
3. The implications by the phrase, “shall be in the midst of many people” – This hints at the smallness of the remnant!
A. Yet, the “as the dew” – this is the first simile that illustrates for us the blessings that come from God to His remnant! (vs. 7)
B. The second simile “as a lion” - Judah will be the lion! Though lions have a bad reputation at times… this simile’s focus is on the power from the lion!
C. This lion of Judah will strike fear in the hearts of all who fight against her!
D. Then as the young lion against the sheep and tearing them to pieces! Those that are the enemies of God will be destroyed.
1. Psalm 62:11 “Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,” God is in view and He will rule as a lion among the wild animals of the forest! The Lion dominates the beasts! So does our Messiah dominate with complete strength and powe
Jehovah’s hand will rise! “Thine hand shall be lifted up” and “all the enemies shall be cut off.” He will beat to pieces many people! Isaiah 54:15 “If anyone stirs up strife, it is not from me; whoever stirs up strife with you shall fall because of you.” , Isaiah 54:17 “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”” ) Just like in the Exodus! “The strong hand of the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Exodus 13:9
He will destroy your chariots- Yahweh will remove all instruments of war and perfect peace will be in it’s place! Remember God had not allowed His people to use chariots! Deuteronomy 17:16 “Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’”
Why? God didn’t want His people to trust in uncertain power! But in thee only power! That is Jehovah God! Psalm 20:7 “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
Why? The world trusts in chariots and horses of today! Maybe airplanes and tanks! God is said to remove these idols/faulty trusts.
For what purpose? Calvin said, “The Church will never be safe, till she is stripped of all creature trusts, and rests on Jehovah alone! Zechariah 9:10 “I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.”
Again He will do this cutting off! Jeremiah 50:37 “A sword against her horses and against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst, that they may become women! A sword against all her treasures, that they may be plundered!”
Or Jeremiah 51:21 “with you I break in pieces the horse and his rider; with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer;”
Jehovah will cut off cities and strongholds too! Micah 5:11 “and I will cut off the cities of your land and throw down all your strongholds;” For what purpose? Will God destroy them? No! The purpose in a walled city it to combat the enemy! There will no longer be a need for the walls! Jeremiah 49:31 ““Rise up, advance against a nation at ease, that dwells securely, declares the Lord, that has no gates or bars, that dwells alone.”
Micah 5:12 “and I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes;” No one will seek out other Satanic influences because their will be peace! Jehovah will cut off all false gods. Because He is the true LORD of all! No longer statues of graven images! Just the true image of God on their hearts!
The result of those that do not obey?
Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.””
Micah 5:15 “And in anger and wrath I will execute vengeance on the nations that did not obey.”
Psalm 149:7 “to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples,”
To execute vengeance upon the heathen, And punishments upon the people;
All those that have not listened to God’s warnings will be cut off!
2. But one last appeal to Israel, before all creation, of what God requires of them!
A. “Contend thou” before the mountains? Literally Jehovah wants His people to plead in the presence of His creation! Why? The earth is a witness against you! Genesis 32:1 “Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.”
Isaiah 1:2 “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: “Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.”
B. He contends with His people Israel! He showed kindness and they have dealt wickedly against Him! Jehovah has always dealt with Israel as His people! Micah 6:3 ““O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me!”
C. He has always dealt with love with them and with us! 1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” Maybe the problem is that His people didn’t love Him!
D. God always has done marvelous for His people! Micah 6:4 “For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.”
5. what Balak … consulted—how Balak plotted to destroy thee by getting Balaam to curse thee (
Now what? What does the Lord want? Micah 6:6 ““With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?”
Will God be pleased with Burnt offerings? Will it be rivers of oil? Will God be appeased by my offering so much oil that it shall flow. (vs. 7)
Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
What is good for man? To do what is good! What really can a man do that is good? Ecclesiastes 7:20
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
All of our righteousness is as filthy wrags in His site. On our best day we can not fulfill the covenant of God. The only one to fulfill this righteousness is God Almighty.
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”
And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”
He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half.
And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.
Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.
But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.
And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,
the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
God is the ultimate good, and He accomplishes that which we can not!
