Series: Rebuilding the Heart
Base Text: Nehemiah 4â6 (NLT)
Title: âA Heart That Overcomes Oppositionâ
Welcome / ConnectionSay:âGood afternoon, family! What a joy to be together again in the house of God.We have been walking together in this series Rebuilding the Heart. In Week 1 we learned: âLook at the Ruins, Feel the Burden.â Nehemiah wept, fasted, and prayed when he heard the wall had fallen. Everything begins when we allow God to break our hearts.
In Week 2 we said: âTuned to the Frequency of the King.â Nehemiah first sought the King of heaven, and thatâs why he walked in the favor of the king on earth.
In Week 3 we said: âEvery Heart on the Wall.â The wall went up because everyone participated, shoulder to shoulder.
And now in Week 4 we arrive at this reality: the moment you begin to rebuild, the enemy begins to resist.
Todayâs message is called: âA Heart That Overcomes Opposition.â Tell the person next to you: âIâm not coming down from the wall.ââ
Hook / Illustration[Hold a brick in one hand and the Bible in the other.]Say:âThe moment you lift a brick to rebuild, the devil lifts a weapon to resist. He isnât worried if youâre in ruins, but he trembles when you rise to restore.Has it happened to you? The day you decide to pray more, suddenly everything gets complicated. The day you decide to forgive, suddenly more offenses come. The day you say, âIâm going to serve God with all my heart,â attacks start in your home, at work, in your health.Thatâs not a coincidenceâthatâs spiritual opposition. But hereâs the good news: opposition is confirmation. If the enemy is attacking you, itâs because youâre advancing.â
PrayerâLord, open our eyes today. Teach us to recognize the enemyâs tactics, give us strength to stay on the wall, and give us focus to finish the work You started. In Jesusâ name, amen.â
Main Body
Point 1: Expect Opposition
đ Nehemiah 4:1â3 (NLT)
âSanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews, saying in front of his friends and the army officers of Samaria, âWhat does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think theyâre doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heapâand charred ones at that?â Tobiah the Ammonite, who was standing beside him, remarked, âThat stone wall would collapse if even a fox walked along the top of it!ââ
Say:
âSanballat and Tobiah mocked, minimized, ridiculed. Thatâs the enemyâs first weaponâmockery.
The devil wants you to doubt yourself: âYouâre not enough. You donât have what it takes. Youâll fail again.â
But the enemyâs mockery is a sign the work is advancing. If you werenât a threat, he wouldnât waste time on you.â
đ 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)
âStay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.â
đ 2 Corinthians 4:8â9 (NLT)
âWe are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.â
Say:
âThe roar can be loud, but it has no teeth. He can shout, but he canât devour you, because you have a God who never abandons you.â
Point 2: Recognize the Enemyâs Strategies
Say:
âIn Nehemiah 4â6 the enemy uses five main tactics. And watchâthese are the same ones the devil still uses today.â
A. Mockery / Discouragement
đ Nehemiah 4:1â3 (NLT)
Say:
âThe enemy uses words to sow doubt. But remember: God uses the weak to shame the strong.â
đ 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NLT)
âInstead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.â
B. Intimidation / Fear
đ Nehemiah 4:11 (NLT)
âMeanwhile, our enemies were saying, âBefore they know whatâs happening, we will swoop down on them and kill them and end their work.ââ
đ Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
âDonât be afraid, for I am with you. Donât be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.â
đ 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
âFor God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.â
Say:
âFear paralyzes, but faith advances. Fear says, âWhat if you fail?â Faith answers, âWhat if God backs me up?ââ
C. Distraction
đ Nehemiah 6:2â3 (NLT)
âSo Sanballat and Geshem sent a message asking me to meet them at one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But I realized they were plotting to harm me, so I replied by sending this message to them: âI am engaged in a great work, so I canât come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?ââ
đ Luke 10:41â42 (NLT)
âBut the Lord said to her, âMy dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.ââ
đ Hebrews 12:1â2 (NLT)
âTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.â
Say:
âThe devil doesnât always come with a swordâmany times he comes with an invitation. He knows if he canât stop you, he can distract you. But Nehemiah answered, âIâm engaged in a great work and I canât come!â You need that same determination.â
D. Deception / Lies
đ Nehemiah 6:6â8 (NLT)
âIt is reported among the nations⌠that you and the Jews are planning to rebel and that is why you are building the wall. According to these reports, you plan to be their king⌠I replied, âThere is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.ââ
đ John 8:44 (NLT)
âHe has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.â
Say:
âThe devil doesnât createâhe counterfeits. He spreads rumors, circulates lies, and tries to make you believe your effort is in vain. But you have the Word of God as truth.â
E. Weariness / Exhaustion
đ Nehemiah 4:10 (NLT)
âThen the people of Judah began to complain, âThe workers are getting tired, and there is so much rubble to be moved. We will never be able to build the wall by ourselves.ââ
đ Galatians 6:9 (NLT)
âSo letâs not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we donât give up.â
đ Matthew 11:28â29 (NLT)
âThen Jesus said, âCome to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.ââ
Say:
âThe enemy knows if he canât destroy you, heâll try to wear you down. But God promises rest. If you came tired today, He says to you: âCome to me and I will give you rest.ââ
Point 3: How to Keep Your Focus
Pray First, Act Afterđ Nehemiah 4:9 (NLT)âBut we prayed to our God and guarded the city day and night to protect ourselves.â
đ Philippians 4:6â7 (NLT)
âDonât worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience Godâs peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.â
Say:
âPrayer doesnât replace action, but action without prayer is empty. Seek God first, then take steps. Before you react, pray.â
Build with One Hand and Fight with the Otherđ Nehemiah 4:17 (NLT)âThe laborers carried on their work with one hand supporting their load and one hand holding a weapon.â
đ Ephesians 6:11 (NLT)
âPut on all of Godâs armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.â
Say:
âThatâs the Christian life: you build with one hand and you fight with the other. With one you build your family, and with the other you fight in prayer. With one you lift your marriage, and with the other you declare the Word of God against the enemy.â
Declare Godâs Word Over the Liesđ Nehemiah 6:8 (NLT)âI replied, âThere is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.ââ
đ Matthew 4:4 (NLT)
âBut Jesus told him, âNo! The Scriptures say, âPeople do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.âââ
Say:
âYou donât argue with the devilâyou answer him with the Word. When he says, âYouâll never change,â you declare: âIf anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.â When he says, âYouâll never be able to,â you declare: âI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.ââ
Stay on the Wall Until Itâs Finishedđ Nehemiah 6:3 (NLT)âSo I replied by sending this message to them: âI am engaged in a great work, so I canât come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?ââ
đ Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
âAnd I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.â
Say:
âDonât come down! Donât quit. Donât step back. What God started in you, He will finish.â
Point 4: God Finishes What He Starts
đ Nehemiah 6:15â16 (NLT)
âSo on October 2 the wall was finishedâjust fifty-two days after we had begun. When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God.â
Say:
âThe wall wasnât finished because they were strongâit was finished because God was faithful. In the same way your life will be a testimony: âOnly God could have done this.ââ
Close / Altar CallSay:âSome of you are being mocked. Others are paralyzed by fear. Some are distracted. Others are tired. But today God gives you new strength.Take your brick. Take your sword. Declare by faith: âIâm engaged in a great work and I canât come down!âDonât come down from the wall. Donât give up. Because when the work is finished, your life will be a testimony: âGod did this.ââ
Prayer:
âLord, today we receive Your strength. Silence the mockery, break fear, remove distraction, tear down the lies, and renew our strength. Today we declare: we will not come down from the wall until Your work is fulfilled in our lives. In Jesusâ name, amen.â
