Week 1 Themed Devotional — Words of Kindness
Week 1 Themed Devotional — Words of Kindness
Big Idea: Kind words tie people together like knots tie ropes together.
Proverbs 16:24
Kind words are like honey—
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
Leader Script (≈8–10 minutes)
Leader Script (≈8–10 minutes)
1. Setup (1 minute)
1. Setup (1 minute)
(Hold up two ropes)
“Can everybody see these ropes? They look simple, right? But here’s the thing: ropes can be tied in ways that either make them strong or weak. Our words work the same way. Tonight, we’re going to see how kind words can hold people together like strong knots.”
2. Object Lesson (2 minutes)
2. Object Lesson (2 minutes)
(Tie a wrong knot, tug hard so it slips apart)
“Look at this knot. It looks fine, but when you pull on it—uh oh, it slips! Some knots don’t hold up under pressure. And some words don’t either. Words that are mean, careless, or unkind—they don’t build friendships. They break them.”
(Now tie a square knot — left over right, right over left. Tug firmly, it holds tight)
“Now check this one out. This is a square knot. When I pull on it, it stays strong. That’s what kind words do! Kind words are like strong knots—they hold friendships together even when life tugs on us.”
3. Scripture Connection (2 minutes)
3. Scripture Connection (2 minutes)
(Open Bible, read slowly and clearly)
“The Bible says in Proverbs 16:24, ‘Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.’
That means kind words taste good to our hearts. They heal us when we’re hurting.”
(Look around the group)
“Can you think of a time when someone’s kind words helped you—maybe made you feel better, braver, or stronger? Raise your hand and share.”
(Allow 2–3 short answers, affirm each one: “That’s a great example!”)
4. Application Challenge (2 minutes)
4. Application Challenge (2 minutes)
“Here’s the truth: words are powerful. They can tear people down, or they can build people up. Tonight, we’re going to practice building.”
(On board or verbally, give the formula)
“Here’s how to give a strong kind sentence:
👉 Name + what you noticed + why it matters.
Example: ‘Maria, I noticed you welcomed the new girl. That showed courage and kindness.’”
“Okay, turn to the person next to you and practice one kind sentence. Go!”
(Give 30 seconds, circulate and encourage, then call them back)
“See? That wasn’t so hard. One kind sentence can tie a friendship closer.”
5. Wrap-Up & Call-and-Response (1–2 minutes)
5. Wrap-Up & Call-and-Response (1–2 minutes)
“Let’s remember what we learned: Kind words are strong knots that tie us together.”
(Lead call-and-response, twice with growing energy)
Leader: “Kind words…”
Group: “…tie us together!”
(Clap once, bring them back in)
“Great job. Let’s pray.”
Closing Prayer (30 seconds)
Closing Prayer (30 seconds)
“Jesus, thank You for giving us the gift of words. Help us to use our words to build, not break—to tie people closer, not push them away. This week, remind us to speak kindness wherever we go. Amen.”
Take-Home Challenge
Take-Home Challenge
“Before you leave tonight, speak one kind sentence to someone here. And tomorrow, speak another kind sentence to someone at school. Let’s start tying strong knots of kindness.”
