Recap of 1 Timothy 2 Issues

The mention of election in 1 Timothy 2

God’s Desire Has Always Been For All People to be saved
This is the plan from the beginning
Part of God’s wrath against Israel in the Old Testament was because they had become inwardly focused and nationalistic
God said you won’t go to the nations?
Ok I will have you taken and bring them to you
Creation mandate:

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it

Commission to Noah: after the flood in Genesis 9:1-7. God reiterated the commands to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth,"
Same thing to Abraham: all people will be blesses through your seed
Isaiah 49:6 “he says, “It is not enough for you to be my servant raising up the tribes of Jacob and restoring the protected ones of Israel. I will also make you a light for the nations, to be my salvation to the ends of the earth.””
Isaiah 45:22 “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is no other.”
Psalm 67:2 “so that your way may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.”
Psalm 96:3 “Declare his glory among the nations, his wondrous works among all peoples.”
Habakkuk 2:14 “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory, as the water covers the sea.”
There are alot of them
This has always been God’s plan
SO…..The Great Commision of Matthew 28 as re-commision of creation mandate :

18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations

2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.”
2. Reasons for election in light of God’s Plan for All People
The Message of 1 Timothy and Titus b. God’s Desire Concerns All People (2:3–4)

Election is usually introduced in Scripture to do several important things

humble us (reminding us that the credit for our salvation belongs to God alone),

or to reassure us (promising us that God’s love will never let us go),

or to stir us to mission (recalling that God chose Abraham and his family in order through him to bless all the families of the earth).

Election is never introduced in order to contradict the universal offer of the gospel or to provide us with an excuse for opting out of world evangelization.

Here is the paradigm change we must gain especially in 1 Timothy 2:4 “who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
The Message of 1 Timothy and Titus b. God’s Desire Concerns All People (2:3–4)

If some are excluded, it is because they exclude themselves by rejecting the gospel offer. As for God, he wants all men to be saved

Hells doors are locked from the inside
as C. S. Lewis wrote in The Great Divorce, "There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'THY will be done.' All that are in Hell choose it."
Hell was not in the original blueprints for creation; it was an add-on. It was built for the devil and his angels
Matthew 25:41 ““Then he will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!”
Hell had to be retrofitted for humanity because there were those who chose it.
This is taken by Chad Bird on a great article on this:
Though the Father did everything necessary to save them in Jesus Christ; though he sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world but to redeem it; though he desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth; indeed, even though God actively and willfully seeks out the lost, nevertheless there are some who steadfastly refuse to have anything to do with him.
If they want nothing to do with God, then why would they want anything to do with God’s home? We don't even visit the homes of our enemies, much less pack up and move in with them.
So it is with the enemies of God. They would rather “pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power,” (2 Thess 1:9).
When God sends them to hell, it is indeed punishment, but he’s only giving them what they asked for.
In the words of C. S. Lewis, "The doors of hell are locked on the inside."

Women in Ministry Things to Think About

One this is addressing chaos in the sunday service
It was about A need to maintain order and credibility as a church in a fragile, growing church in a pagan city.
Does that make sense about the letter as a whole

1. False Teaching in Ephesus

The overarching issue in 1 Timothy is false doctrine:
1 Timothy 1:3-7: Paul urges Timothy to stay in Ephesus to command certain people not to teach false doctrines.
Women were particularly vulnerable to these teachings, possibly because they had less formal education than men at the time.
Key link: The connection between false teachers and women is most directly seen in 2 Timothy 3:6-7, which speaks of false teachers who “worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women.”

2. The Ephesian Religious Environment: Temple of Artemis

Ephesus was home to the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Artemis was a female deity associated with fertility, female dominance, and protection during childbirth.
Her cult often elevated women over men in religious roles.
Some scholars suggest that influence from the Artemis cult may have led to women in the church adopting attitudes of religious superiority or dominance.
This might explain Paul’s language in 1 Timothy 2:12, where he says, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man.” The Greek word for “assume authority” (authentein) means domineering or usurping authority—not just teaching.

3. Lack of Education Among Women

In Greco-Roman society, especially in Ephesus:
Women typically had limited access to formal education.
This left many women ill-equipped to teach or refute false doctrine, especially in a public church setting.
Paul’s instruction for women to “learn in quietness and full submission” (1 Tim. 2:11) could be read not as a prohibition, but as encouragement for women to first become learners—a radical affirmation in that context.

4. Gender Roles and Disruption in Worship

There may have been chaos in worship due to certain women (and possibly men) behaving disruptively:
Paul addresses modesty and self-control (1 Tim. 2:9-10) in response to wealthy women dressing provocatively or flaunting status.
His emphasis on order in worship may reflect a desire to maintain the church’s witness in a very pagan, status-conscious city.

Summary: Why Did Paul Write 1 Timothy with These Instructions?

Paul's letter responds to a specific situation in Ephesus, not creating a universal ban on women's leadership. His goals were to:
Correct false teaching
Restore order in worship (1 Timothy 3:15 “But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”
Ensure women were properly taught before teaching others
Guard against pagan religious influence (e.g., Artemis cult)
Protect the church’s reputation in a hostile culture

How the 2 Views apply the context:

Complementarians see men and women having different roles but equal value
To that group women are commanded in this passage and in chapter 3 not to be pastors
To them the context is true BUT since Paul anchors the roles in creation not context it applies to all people through all time
Egalitarians believe the context caused the command and it only applies to that specific church in Ephesus 2000 years ago and any church i guess that ever finds itself in the same place contextually

One thing no matter where you land is this: Biblical Gender Instruction is ALWAYS about good oder NOT human value

So lets let the bible give us a clearer picture of what this hard verse is saying
Galatians 3:28 “There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
So right off the bat we know this isn’t saying men have more value
Paul said in Galatians we are co heirs together in the gospel
So submission is about order not about value
Ephesians 5:21 “submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.”
So off the bat we also learn we are all in this church supposed to submit our wants to one another to see whats best for them happen not simply be a means to my own ends
Ephesians 5:25–26 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.”
This gives us even more light to see this text in when we see as a whole what it is and isn’t
When order is out in anything it’s falls apart
Show me a passive coward husband and dad and I will show you a mess of a home
it is the same in church
Jesus was radically pro woman and from these verses and Pauls ministry we can see he was too
Jesus honored women and empowered them for ministry, but when it came to selecting those for positions of leadership and authority, he chose only men. Our Lord had no trouble being radically pro-women and unequivocally complementarian at the same time. Neither should we.
Paul had women deacons (Phoebe in Romans 16:1-2)
Paul had women teaching men (Acts 18 a husband-and-wife team, corrected Apollos by privately teaching him the full message of Christ )

God’s Good Design For Church Order

This saying is trustworthy: “If anyone aspires to be an overseer,, he desires a noble work.” 2 An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not an excessive drinker, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy. 4 He must manage his own household competently and have his children under control with all dignity. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a new convert, or he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the devil’s trap.

8 Deacons, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not hypocritical, not drinking a lot of wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons. 11 Wives,, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything. 12 Deacons are to be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households competently. 13 For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS

14 I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon. 15 But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great:

He was manifested in the flesh,

vindicated in the Spirit,

seen by angels,

preached among the nations,

believed on in the world,

taken up in glory.
