Intro
We are beginning a series of messages this evening on Nehemiah chapter 9 called “The Worthy God”
I believe this is fitting leading up to the Thanksgiving and Christmas months where we will focus on praise to our God
This series should magnify God and motivate the child of God
What is the measure of worth?
If I get ??? money for this item, I’ll sell it
If I get ???, than it’s worth it
So much the mentality toward serving God is “What can I get out of it?”
“If God doesn’t do what I want Him to, than I’m out.”
Statement for the series: Our God is a worthy God
Worthy: deserving
Revelation 4:1–4 KJV 1900
1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. 2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
Revelation 4:9–10 KJV 1900
9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
Revelation 4:11 KJV 1900
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Worthy of our:
praise
David said:
Psalm 18:3 KJV 1900
3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: So shall I be saved from mine enemies.
Revelation 5:12 KJV 1900
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
worship
Psalm 95:6 KJV 1900
6 O come, let us worship and bow down: Let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
Psalm 99:5 KJV 1900
5 Exalt ye the Lord our God, And worship at his footstool; For he is holy.
Revelation 4:10 KJV 1900
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
service
Colossians 3:23–24 KJV 1900
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
sacrifice
Philippians 4:18 KJV 1900
18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
1 Peter 2:5 KJV 1900
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
obedience
Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV 1900
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Tonight, after the baptism and conclusion of the service, we will have a prayer walk in the parking lot...
I want to remind us all: it is a privilege and honor to have the opportunity to speak to our God in prayer
He is “The Worthy God”
Context to Nehemiah 9:
6:15 - Wall was finished in 52 days
7:2 - Hanani and Hananiah were made rulers of the palace
7:6 - A genealogy is listed who returned from captivity
Chapter 8 - All the people gathered together and Ezra brought the book of the law and read from morning until mid day
8:9 - the people wept when they heard the Word read to them
8:13 - they found written in the book how they were supposed to dwell in booths, so they made booths
8:18 - During the 7 day feast of tabernacles they read the book every day and there was a solemn assembly on the 8th day
Important to know what the feast of tabernacles was, to know what they JUST finished doing as we go into the prayer in chapter 9:
Leviticus 23:33-44 tells us about the feast of tabernacles… also called the feast of booths
It was to be done on the 15th day of the 7 month… roughly the end of September (fitting) translated to our calendar
Day 1 was a holy convocation (assembly)
Day 1-7 a sacrifice was to be offered
On the 8th day a holy convocation (assembly) was to be made and another offering made by fire was done
The 8th day was a solemn assembly
During the feast there was:
Feasting
Offering of sacrifices
Praying
Rejoicing
Obeying God
Now chapter 9:
Nehemiah 9:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them. 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God.
Their feasting turned into fasting
Instead of the pride of “Look what we have done.”… it is the submission to what God hath done.
They confessed their sins AND the sins of their fathers
They read the book of the Law of the LORD their God for one fourth part of the day
and another fourth they confessed and worshipped the Lord their God
What if we took 3 hours to preach and read the Word...
Then took another 3 hours to confess and worship God?
We sing songs like “Take time to be Holy”, but when the time comes, it’s another story...
“The Worthy God” - Why?

1. He is the Worthy God Because His name is exalted above all

Nehemiah 9:5 KJV 1900
5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
Think about His names in scripture:
Advocate
Almighty
Alpha and Omega
The Amen
Author of Salvation
Bread of Life
Chief Cornerstone
Chief Shepherd
Christ
Creator
Everlasting Father
Faithful and True
God
The Great Shepherd
The I AM
King
Lamb of God
Lion of the Tribe of Judah
Lord of Lords
Mighty God
Righteous One
“Stand up and bless the LORD your God...”
God speaks to us through the Bible and we speak to him in prayer and our obedience to Him...
Our obedience communicates that we love Him
Our proper worship communicates that He’s dear to us (sweet smelling savour)
Philippians 2:9–11 KJV 1900
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
We don’t bow to Buddha
We don’t bow to Mohammad
We don’t bow to money
We don’t bow to comfort
We serve a worthy God whose NAME is exalted above all...
Exodus 20:3 KJV 1900
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
God is worthy… deserving to be # 1 in our lives
Idolatry was a CONSTANT issue God worked with the Israelites on...
Deuteronomy 6:14–15 KJV 1900
14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; 15 (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
Jeremiah 2:11–13 KJV 1900
11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Hosea 13:4 KJV 1900
4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, And thou shalt know no god but me: For there is no saviour beside me.
Have you ever stopped for a moment of going through your list of needs from God to just thank Him for WHO He is?

2. He is the Worthy God because He is God alone

Nehemiah 9:6 KJV 1900
6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
Is He Lord alone in your life?
No idolatry, but also no adultery
Jeremiah 3:1–3 KJV 1900
1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the Lord.
Jeremiah 3:6–9 KJV 1900
6 The Lord said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.
Is He God alone in your life?
Hymn: Nothing Between (hymn 427)

3. He is Worthy because He Created Everything

No other God can say:
Genesis 1:1 KJV 1900
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Colossians 1:15–18 KJV 1900
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Paul had to warn the Romans of this:
Romans 1:25 KJV 1900
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Serve the Creator, not the creature...

4. God is Worthy Because of His Continual Care for His Creation

He sees when a sparrow falls
He hears when a raven cries out for food
He has the stars numbered and named
He even knows the number of hairs on your head
God created the world and He continues to preserve it and take care of it...
Conclusion:
God is Worthy Because His name is Exalted Above All
God is Worthy Because He is God alone
God is Worthy Because He created everything
God is Worthy Because of His Continual Care for His Creation
God deserves your praise, worship, service, sacrifice and obedience
