While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Luke 7:36–50 ESV

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Jesus’ Mother & Brothers

Matthew 12:46–50 ESV

While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

Luke 7:36–38 ESV

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. Pharisee named Simon

not to be confused with Simon Peter or others

nor with Simon the Leper (Mary Magdelene washed Jesus feet with perfume)

Sinful Woman (bed reputation)

A Perfume Jar

She was weeping and her tears fall on Jesus’ feet

She wipes the tears off with her hair

kissing his feet & annointing them with the perfume

locals would come and witness a meal of important people, sat along the wall

She broke with protocol

Roman empire made lying to eat common practice

She is overwhelmed with sorry for past sin

Not just ordinary olive oil

Luke 7:39–42 ESV

Simon is offended by Jesus allowing this to occur

Self-righteous

Internally he says “if this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman his is who is touching him, for she is a sinner”

Simon answers “Say it, teacher” or “go ahead, teacher”

Money lender - 2 debtors

One owed 500 denarii

The other 50 denarii

When the could not pay he cancels both debts

“Now which of them will love him more?”

Luke 7:43–47 ESV

Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Simone supposes the one with the larger debt

Jesus affirms “you have judged rightly”

Jesus turns to Simon saying..

“Do you see this woman?”

“I entered your house, and you have me no water for my feet”

“She has wet my feet with tears and wiped them with her hair”

“You gave me no kiss”

“he has not ceased to kiss my feet”

“You did not anount my head with oil”

“she has announted my feet with ointment”

“I tell you, her sins, which are many are forgiven - for she loved much”

“But he who is forgiven little, loved little”

The reception had been cold, patronizing, discourteous.

He was not afforded any of what was customary evidences of hispitaliy

“Blessed are those who Mourn” - Beatitudes - Sermon on the Mount

Simon regarded himself as righteous - forgiven (if he even felt the need of any forgiveness)

he looked upon the woman as a sinner - unforgiven

Jesus shows that Simon demonstrates his lack of love and proves that he has not been forgiven

Jesus provides merciful inference “has been forgiven little”

while the woman can rejoice in the freedom from guilt she has received as a gift of God’s grace

Luke 7:48–50 ESV

And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

“Your sins are forgiven”

Those at the table: “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”

Jesus said to the woman: “Your faith has saved you; go in peace”
