Haters Gonna Hate
Haters Gonna Hate
13 And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk.
14 And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?”
“We know…”
Liars!
They are trying to get Jesus to either…
Get in trouble with the Romans
Get in trouble with the Jewish people
These dudes have their hearts set on being against Jesus…
Thats true for a lot of people… sadly…
Haters gonna hate
Jesus is The GOAT
Jesus is The GOAT
15 But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”
Jesus sees deep into hearts…
Why is that? What makes Jesus the GOAT??
9 … for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought…
10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Jesus is YHWH God…
16 And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.”
17 Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.
Ask a student to come forward…
Ask… “who’s likeness is this?”
Essentially, Jesus is teaching that what God wants most is US!!!
Hypocrites Twist God’s Law
Hypocrites Twist God’s Law
What is a hypocrite?
18 And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying,
19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
Okay… so in that day… women were completely dependent upon men for the provision…
Marriage and having children determined weather or not a woman would be provided for in the future… If a woman had no husband and no children, her outlook was not good. She would likely either become homeless, become a slave, or a prostitute. It was terribly sad.
Question… do you think these guys actually care about the widow they are talking about???
20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring.
21 And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise.
22 And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died.
Okay… what a terribly sad story… Heartbreaking…
But, seriously… look at how these dudes go on to talk about this woman…
23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”
THESE GUYS ONLY VIEW THIS WOMAN AS PROPERTY!!
Some people will read this story and miss what is really going on here. This is showing the absolute sickness that sin creates in a society. The law these men are referencing didn’t exist to enrich them with property… It existed to protect the most vulnerable in a society.
These men don’t even realize how lost they are… They have the same type of heart condition that is talked about in Genesis when Tamar becomes a widow…
That story details how a man named Judah had 3 sons. Er, Onan, and Shelah…
Er took Tamar as his wife… But, the Bible says he was a wicked man. And God knew it… So Er died. Then Onan married Tamar, and instead of having a child with her to preserve the memory of his brother, Er, and make sure that Tamar was taken care of, he used her for his own sexual pleasure… This greatly upset God… So then, Onan died. Judah, their father was supposed to have Shelah, his youngest son, marry Tamar when he was of age to preserve the lineage, but didn’t… I mean… Eventually Tamar tricks Judah and has a son… But when all is said and done, this story highlights the reality that God loves widows and wants them cared for… Its likely the reason why God gave specific laws to Moses in order to protect widows… But here… we have men, who are supposed to teach this Law and model righteousness to the Israelite people, using the Law to accuse GOD of unrighteousness. All the while, they are overlooking the main point of the Law… Its God’s love!!
But, Jesus knows all of this!!
Jesus Proves He is The GOAT
Jesus Proves He is The GOAT
24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?
25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
The purpose of marriage and of the Law is not necessary in the resurrection!!
Why????
So, now Jesus is going to point out something amazing about what the Old Testament historical texts show…
26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I **am** the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
Question: Is the scripture here referencing Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as if they are gone???
The ESV Study Bible Chapter 12
Abraham therefore continues to exist and to enjoy the blessings of God’s covenant, and hence will also be raised from the dead.
27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”
What should we do?
Don’t get sucked into the “knowledge” of religion
Try to love people more than you love “knowledge”
Look at God’s Law as something meant to bless and protect you
Trust Jesus because He is the GOAT
Jesus is the ultimate protection and blessing… He ensures we are protected and provided for. His resurrection is our guarantee of resurrection.
