Introduction:
Romans 8:1–2 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Freedom is one of the most powerful gifts God offers His children.
In Romans 8:1-2, Paul declares that those who are in Christ are no longer condemned—they are free from the law of sin and death.
This freedom is not just legal—it is spiritual, emotional, and eternal.
Many believers struggle with guilt, shame, and fear, but Scripture reminds us that in Christ, we are truly free.
Today, we will explore what this freedom means and how to walk in it daily.
Body:
You Are Free from Condemnation
Romans 8:1 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Context—Paul is writing to Christians in Rome, explaining the difference between living under the law and living under grace in faith and obedience. Chapter 1 begins with receiving grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith. Chapter 3 reveals the need for deliverance from sin because all are under sin and have sinned. Chapter 6 reveals how to be delivered from sin in order to have newness of life in Christ. Chapter 7 ends with a cry for deliverance from sin’s power. Chapter 8 begins with the triumphant declaration of freedom in walking in obedience to Christ. And Chapter 16 ends by teaching the church to recognize those who refuse to be obedient and commending the church for being obedient to Christ.
Key Insight—In Christ, you are no longer judged by your past. In Christ the penalty of sin has been paid and you are declared righteous.
Galatians 3:26–27 “26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
Romans 6:3–4 “3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Application—Stop living under guilt and shame. Embrace your identity as forgiven and free.
How to Accomplish
If you have not been baptized. Ask the question “What must I do?” and embrace the answer “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins...(Acts 2:38) and be free from condemnation safe in Christ.
If you have been baptized but are still living in sin and want to be free from condemnation “Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you (Acts 8:22).
Reflection—Are you still carrying condemnation or are you free in Christ where there is no condemnation?
Supporting Scripture:
Ephesians 1:3 “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,”
Isaiah 43:25 “25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.”
Acts 3:19 “19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,”
Acts 22:16 “16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’”
You Are Free From the Power of Sin
Romans 8:2 NKJV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Context—Paul contrasts two laws: the law of sin and death (which brings bondage) and the law of the Spirit of life (which brings freedom). This is not just theological—it is practical. The Spirit empowers believers to overcome sin.
Key Insight—You are no longer a slave to sin. The Holy Spirit gives you power to live righteously.
Two chapters earlier in Romans 6 Paul tells us how to be free from sin.
Twice in this chapter he uses the words freed or free from sin.
Romans 6:7 “freed from sin.”
Romans 6:7 “7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.”
Romans 6:18 “free from sin.”
Romans 6:18 “18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Romans 6:7 tells us that we have to die to be free from sin.
Romans 6:1-6 tells us this death takes place in baptism
Romans 6:16 gives us the two laws of Romans 8:2.
“Sin leading to death”— “law of sin and death”.
“obedience leading to righteousness”— “law of the Spirit of life”.
Romans 6:17 describes the law of the Spirit of life which freed us from sin.
Romans 6:17 “17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.”
“obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine.”
baptism is the doctrine that is described in verses 1-7 which gives us the form in which we die.
Working backwards from verse 7 we see the form play out.
vs. 7—dying sets us free from sin.
How did we die—vs. 6 we were “crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with.”
When were we crucified—vs. 5 when we were “united together in the likeness of His death.”
When were we united together in the likeness of His death—vs 4 when we were “buried with Him through baptism into death.”
When were we buried with Him through baptism into death—vs 3 when we “were baptized into Christ.”
Baptism is the law of the Spirt of life which frees us from sin and death.
Jesus gave this law.
Mark 16:15–16 “15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
He who believes and is baptized is the law of the Spirit of life which frees us.
Rom. 6.17—which you were delivered or freed from sin, or saved
Mark 16:16-will be saved or delivered or freed from sin
Rom. 8:2 free from the law of sin or delivered or saved
It is a law throughout the Scriptures that baptism saves from the law of sin and death.
Acts 2:38 “38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
For the remission of sins
Acts 22:16 “16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’”
wash away your sins
1 Peter 3:21 “21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”
There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism
Application—Live or walk by the Spirit, not by the flesh. Choose to be obedient and surrender daily.
Galatians 5:24–25 “24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
How to Accomplish this:
Surrender and be obedient to that form of doctrine and be delivered.
Live as if you are free from sin.
Reflection—Are you living free from sin because you have been crucified with Christ and are covered by the blood?
Supporting Scripture
Luke 9:23 “23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
Romans 12:1 “1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
You Are Free to Live a New Life
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Context—Paul warns the Galatians not to return to the law of Moses. Christ’s freedom is meant to be lived out—not just believed intellectually.
Galatians 1 we are called in the grace of Christ to the gospel and instructed not pervert it or turn from it.
Galatians 2 we have Paul calling for the repentance of the people that withdrew and separated themselves from the Gentiles.
Galatians 3 Paul called them foolish and asked “who as bewitched you that you should not obey the truth?”
Galatians 4 Paul said that God sent his son to redeem us so that we could be sons of God and no longer slaves.
Paul said in Galatians 3:26-27 that this process of becoming sons of God is through faith in being obedient and putting Christ on in baptism.
In Galatians 5:1 Paul says “stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free...”
This means as Christians we are free to live a new life because we have been freed from the bondage of sin and should not be entangled in yoke of bondage (law of Moses).
Being entangled in the yoke of bondage and attempting to be justified by law is sinful and Paul says “you have fallen from grace (Gal. 5:24).
Key Insight—Freedom in Christ is not just from something—it is for something. You are free to live a new life because you have crucified the old man.
Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Application—Live as if you are set free from your sins and called to be new creation in Christ.
Identify areas where you still struggle with sin and aim at being better.
Identify areas where you are strong in Christ and spend more time doing those things.
Reflection—Is the person that was raised from the grave of baptism different from the one who died.
Supporting Scripture
Romans 12:1–2 “1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
Conclusion:
You are free—free from condemnation, free from the power of sin, and free to live a new life. This freedom is not earned; it is received through Christ. Romans 8:1-2 is your declaration: you are no longer bound by guilt shame, or fear. Walk boldly in the Spirit, live joyfully in grace, and let your freedom be a testimony to the world that you are reborn in Christ. You are free from sin not to live how you want but to live how God desires.
