Ask For Wisdom

James 1:5 (NASB95) But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

I. Personal and Internal Trials

These are struggles that often take place within an individual's mind, body, and spirit.
Health and Physical Suffering:
Chronic illness, chronic pain, or a debilitating diagnosis (e.g., cancer, autoimmune disease).
Isaiah 40:29–31 “He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.”
Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
The mental and physical decline associated with aging.
Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; And I will bear you and I will deliver you.”
2 Corinthians 4:16 “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.”
Mental and Emotional Anguish:
Depression, anxiety, panic disorders, or other mental health conditions.
Philippians 4:6–7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
1 Peter 5:7 “casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”
Matthew 6:34 ““So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Overwhelming grief from the loss of a loved one.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
Matthew 5:4 ““Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Chronic loneliness and feelings of isolation.
Isaiah 41:10 “‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”
Spiritual and Existential Crises:
A crisis of faith, intense doubt, or feeling spiritually "dry" or abandoned.
Psalm 42:5 “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.”
A sense of purposelessness or despair about the future.
Jeremiah 29:11 “‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.”
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

II. Relational Hardships (Trials & Persecution)

These difficulties arise from our interactions with others.
Family Conflict (Trials):
Marital strife, separation, or a painful divorce.
Colossians 3:13 “bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”
Rebellious or suffering children.
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 29:17 “Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul.”
Caring for aging or sick family members.
Exodus 20:12 ““Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.”
1 Timothy 5:4 “but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.”
Conflict with parents, siblings, or extended family.
Romans 12:18 “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.”
Social Conflict (Can be Trials or Persecution):
Betrayal by a close friend, partner, or colleague.
Slander and False Accusations: Having your reputation unjustly destroyed through lies or gossip.
Ostracism and Social Rejection: Being excluded, mocked, or "canceled" by a social group, community, or online mob, often for your convictions or beliefs.

III. External and Circumstantial Trials

These are hardships that come from external circumstances, often beyond one's control.
Financial and Vocational Crises:
Sudden job loss or long-term unemployment.
Matthew 6:25–26 ““For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?”
Accumulation of overwhelming debt.
Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.”
Psalm 37:21 “The wicked borrows and does not pay back, But the righteous is gracious and gives.”
Disasters and Calamities:
Losing a home or possessions to a fire, flood, or natural disaster.
Isaiah 43:2 ““When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.”
Being a victim of a serious accident or crime.

This category is defined by suffering inflicted specifically for one's identity or beliefs.
Religious or Ideological Persecution:
Being mocked, ridiculed, or insulted specifically for your faith or moral convictions.

Systemic and Violent Persecution:
Unjust legal penalties or imprisonment for one's faith or political dissent.
