Baptism by Fire: A Refining Experience

Bible Passage: Matthew 3:11

Matthew 3:11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I am, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Fire in Scripture symbolizes both judgment and purification.

For the believer, fire refines: removing sin, producing holiness (Malachi 3:2–3 “And who can endure the day of his coming? And who is the one who can stand ⌊when he appears⌋? For he is like a refiner’s fire, like launderers’ alkali. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the children of Levi, and he will refine them like gold and like silver, and they will present to Yahweh offerings in righteousness.” .

For the unrepentant, fire represents God’s judgment (Matthew 13:41–42 “The Son of Man will send out his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all the causes of sin and those who do lawless deeds, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!”
