The churches were being invaded by false teachers concerning circumcision and were going after a “different gospel.”

Paul has to defend/remind his authority as an apostle (chs. 1-2).

Paul has to remind them that Jew and Gentile are able to gain salvation through Christ (chs. 3-4).

Paul tells them about how the grace of God leads to a changed and godly life (chs. 5-6).
