Thoughts
The only offensive weapon
How does the genitive “of the Spirit” modify “sword”? Most likely, Paul intends origin (the Spirit supplies or empowers): this sword derives from the Spirit, which logically leads to its identity as “the word of God

Outline
Message Brief for September 28, 2025 Text: Ephesians 6:10-17 (1177) Title: The Real Battle: The Sword of the Spirit
Introduction: The real enemy, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and today we finish with the sword of the Spirit
Background: The Roman sword was called the Gladius- it was shorter than you might think but was built to penetrate the gaps in an opposing warriors armor- they were very proficient using them to take lives and win victory.
I. The word of God is powerful and transformational Explanation: see Genesis 1, John 1, Revelation 1 and 19 The sword of the Spirit= it comes from God by the Spirit (the Bible for us)
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Illustration: The raising of Lazurus- the spoken word of God
Application: There is no power, government, or nation that can stand against the word of God
II. We have been given access to this powerful and transformational truth that the Spirit uses to change lives and trajectories Explanation:
2 Timothy 3: 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God p may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Illustration: The Temptation of Jesus/
Temptation- I Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it
Difficulty- Philippians 4:6-7- 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Application: Study it, memorize it, meditate on it- be prepared for battle with this amazing God-given weapon
Conclusion- We are at war- put on the full armor of God!
Gospel- In these difficult and confusing times- life victory is found in dependence on God
