Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

· It is important to have context when reading this verse

· This is round 2

Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LordGod had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

· Adam was in a garden, Jesus was in the wilderness

· Adam was full, Jesus was hungry

o What’s the longest you’ve been hungry? 1 meal, 2…

o Who gets grumpy when they’re hungry?

He was tempted:

Romans 5:12-14

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come

· Adam sins we inherit

· If Satan can get Jesus to sin, he cannot save us!

· God cannot sin

· Where Adam fails, Jesus prevails

· Jesus not only wins but gives us an example of how to win

1. “weakness”

· Turn these stones into bread

· Man does not live on bread alone

2. Pride

· I know the bible too

· Jump off and the angels will catch you

· Don’t put the Lord to the test

3. Instant Gratification

· I will give you all the kingdoms of the world if you worship me

· You shall worship God alone

· Then Satan leaves and he is cared for by angels

How does Jesus show us an example?

1. He loves His Father

· Proverbs 14:27

· Jesus does all of this from a place of love for his Father

· Jesus through his death, burial and resurrection does this for us so that our hearts can be changed if we make Jesus the Lord of our life

· If Jesus is our Lord we can have true fortitude not because of our own power, but because of the changed heart that Jesus gives us.

2. He relies on the Spirit

· The Spirit leads him into the wilderness

· The Spirit is the one who called him to not eat

· If we are Christians we have the spirit in us!

· The spirit helps us

· John 14:26

“But the Helper. The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your rememberance all the I have said to you.”

3. He uses the word of God

· Jesus is God all of His words are Gods words

· But He uses the bible to give us an example for how to face hard times

· 2 Timothy 3:16-17

· Psalm 1
