đThe SerpentâThe Deceiver
Genesis 3:1-24
đInsight
Genesis 3 Introduces the serpent as âmore cunning that any beast of the fieldâ (vs. 1). This creature, later revealed as Satan (Rev. 12:9), deceives Eve by twisting Godâs word. The result is shame, separation, and cursed creation. Yet even in judgment, God promises redemptionâ âHe shall bruise your headâ (vs. 15)âpointing to Christâs victory.
âď¸Reflection
Genesis 3:6 says, âShe also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.â This suggests Adam was nearby. Though not mentioned in the serpentâs dialogue, Paul clarifies: âAdam was not deceivedâ (1 Tim. 2:14). That implies he heard the serpent and chose disobedience knowingly. His sin wasnât deceptionâit was silence and passivity.
Adamâs failure wasnât just eating the fruitâit was neglection his role to guard, lead, and protect. This deepens the tragedy of the fall and challenges us today: Are we resisting lies but failing to act in truth?
đNew Testament Connection
The serpent of Eden is unmasked in the New Testament as Satanâthe deceiver, accuser, and tempter:
¡ Revelation 12:9â âSo the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole worldâŚâ
But Christ has triumphed:
¡ Romans 16:20â âAnd the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.â
¡ Colossians 2:15ââHaving disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of themâŚâ
