Romans 8:5-17.

What does a spirit-directed life look like?

I. We have a renewed mind. [5-8]

That focuses on the Spirit and not the flesh

That pleases God

II. We have a dependent heart. [9-11]

That trusts in the presence and power of the Spirit

That leads to life

III. We have a helper to resist sin. [12-13]

That puts to death the deeds of the flesh

That do not honor God and lead to death

IV. We have a secure identity. [14-16]

That rests in the relationship one has with God as Father

We are His children

We cry out to Him as our Father

V. We have a hopeful future. [17]

That reminds the believer of hope even amidst suffering

Response Questions:

Today, if you realize your life is not directed by the Spirit, here are a few questions to diagnose the issue:

Have I believed in Jesus and repented of my sin?

If not, you can do that right now.

Have I followed Jesus, forsaking everything else including selfish desires, wisdom, and gain?

If not, surrender those matters now, so that you might follow Jesus as Lord.

Have I let something or someone in life distract me from following Jesus?

If so, confess your sin today, receive cleansing and renewal from God, and pursue God wholeheartedly.
