Context
We are looking at the night before the death of Jesus
it starts with the annual Passover meal celebration
we will read the narrative from the Passover to where we are looking today
Read Luke 22 14-65
the Sanhedrin’s trial
Easton’s Bible Dictionary Sanhedrim
The Sanhedrin is said to have consisted of seventy-one members, the high priest being president. They were of three classes: (1) the chief priests, or heads of the twenty-four priestly courses (2) the scribes, and (3) the elders. As the highest court of judicature, “in all causes and over all persons, ecclesiastical and civil, supreme,” its decrees were binding, not only on the Jews in Palestine, but on all Jews wherever scattered abroad. Its jurisdiction was greatly curtailed by Herod, and afterwards by the Romans. Its usual place of meeting was within the precincts of the temple, in the hall but it sometimes met also in the house of the high priest who was assisted by two vice-presidents.

there has been already 2 Illegal trials of Jesus
now they are doing things proper
for the world to see that they are on the up and up
this is the official trial of Jesus
these men are not interested in the truth
they never have been and never will
Jesus came as the light of the world
these men have seen and heard of all of the signs that Jesus is God
but they have purposely shut their minds to it
in fact during this trial Jesus will claim to be the Messiah and God the Son

these men are the court
they will find guilty or not
They cannot or will not find any sin which Jesus has done
they will not find any civil or Mosaic laws that He has broken
they do need to find a legal way of condemning Jesus to death
both as a Jew and the Roman law
so with the Mosaic law they will concentrate on getting Jesus to admit He is the Messiah
which is true but they will not accept that
the law says that the person who falsely claims to be the Messiah is blaspheming and deserves death

they ask Jesus are you the Christ?
you will absolutely will not believe the truth
so there is no since to answer

Jesus has already asked them questions that they refuse to answer

Jesus has consistently called Himself the Son of Man
this comes from Daniel 7 13-14
“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And came near before Him.
“And to Him was given dominion, Glory, and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every tongue Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not be taken away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
the son of Man is Jesus the Messiah
Jesus is telling these men that it is Him
and that He is sitting on the throne of the Father
Yahweh says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I put Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
Yahweh will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Have dominion in the midst of Your enemies.”
Your people will offer themselves freely in the day of Your power; In the splendor of holiness, from the womb of the dawn, The dew of Your youthfulness will be Yours.
Here the Son of Man is on the throne of God
Matthew adds another detail
Jesus said to him, “You yourself said it; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Jesus will return to earth to reign
These men know Daniel, the Psalms, and the millennial reign of Christ
so they ask bluntly

there it is Jesus confirming that He is God
confirming that He is God the Son

this trial is over
they believe they have the legal right to kill Jesus
these men willingly love the darkness
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
“And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light lest his deeds be exposed.
These men are evil and want to extinguish the light
their time is here the hour of darkness

they are actually doing the Fathers will
God is using them to bring about
Redemption
Redemption
God’s plan to save people from their sin would not happen without Jesus dying
We could not be saved without The Father putting our sin upon Jesus when he died on the cross
these men for purely selfish reasons killed the Son of God
Satan thought if he could kill Jesus there would be no redemption because Jesus would be dead
no kingdom the king is dead
God is infinately smarter than any human
God is knows the future because He makes the future
Satan will always lose
satan wants to be God always has
satan thinks he can defeat God and His plans
but like us satan is a created being
and has the smarts and abilities that God gives him
the lake of fire was created for satan and his demons to be in torment for eternity
These men and satan have been given permission to kill Jesus on the cross
so that redemption of the bride of Christ can be brought into the family of God
