Introduction:
Q: What do you know about Hebrews? What’s it about?
Authorship: ??? Historically many have pointed to Paul, but the writing style is different and there’s a reference to receiving the gospel from the apostles and not Jesus directly. Paul in other areas refers to the reception of his faith and apostleship from Christ directly (on the road to Damascus).
Audience: Greek speaking Jews in the diaspora likely in Italy. They’re very familiar with the Septuagint, (The greek OT) and are currently under great persecution. Likely between 60AD and 70 AD (no mention of the destruction of the temple) which would also correspond to a period of persecution in Rome.
Major Themes:
Who is Jesus Christ?
How do we endure?
When life is difficult, persecution surrounds us, and the world is falling apart, the most important question we have to answer is “Who is Jesus?” That is the means of our endurance!
Jesus compared to angels (The greater messenger)
Jesus the man
Jesus compared to Moses (The greater prophet)
Jesus our rest
Jesus compared to Melchizedek (The great High Priest)
Jesus mediator of a New Covenant
Jesus the perfect Sacrifice
The Full Assurance of Faith
Jesus the Perfecter of Faith
The Endurance of the Church (An unshaken Kingdom)
Brotherly Love
Hebrews 1:1–14 NASB95
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again, “I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”? 6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7 And of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.” 8 But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.” 10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of Your hands; 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they all will become old like a garment, 12 And like a mantle You will roll them up; Like a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies A footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

What does it say?
What does it mean? (Interpretation) We always interpret Scripture with Scripture. Context, Context, Context.
Application:
What should I believe?
What should I love?
What should I do?
Hebrews 1:1–2 NASB95
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

How has God revealed Himself to us?
prophets
His Son
What character does the Son take on in these first two verses?
He is the Word of God
He has authority as heir
He has power
Hebrews 1:3–4 NASB95
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.
What is the Son’s character?
The radiance of His glory: He bears the glory of God
the exact representation of His nature: He bears the nature of God
His creation is upheld by the word of His power: He bears the power of God.
He is able to purify us from our sins: He brings the forgiveness of God.
He sits at the Father’s right hand: He bears the position of God.
He is given a name that is greater than even the most glorious beings: He has the name of God.
What does it mean?
Who is Jesus?
homoiousios - similar essence/ substance/ being (Arius)
homoousios - same essence/ substance/ being (Athanasius)
What other passages might help us interpret these passages?
Genesis 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:26 NASB95
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Philippians 2:6 NASB95
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Colossians 2:9 NASB95
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
Colossians 1:15–17 NASB95
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
The Nicene Creed
"We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. “And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. “And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen."
Jesus is God!
What does the character of Christ mean for us? What does his deity mean for us from this text. There are numerous application points....
We listen to Him!
He is deserving of glory and our worship!
His purification of sins is perfect!
We can trust Him more knowing he upholds all things by the word of His power.
Providence!
Our Confession: Providence IV: “God from eternity, decrees all things that comes to pass, and perpetually upholds, directs and governs all creatures and all events; yet so as not in any way to be the author or approver of sin nor to destroy the will and responsibility of intelligent creatures.”
5. What does Jesus’ being seated at the right hand of God call us to do, love, or believe?
Trust that the work is finished!
We must continually point sinners to the Great High Priest. Sinners will forever have an intercessor in the presence of God.
We wait: His rule will one day be made complete.
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 8:1 NASB95
1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
Hebrews 10:12–13 NASB95
12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.
Q: Is Jesus just an angel from heaven?
What was the historic purpose of angels? It literally means messenger.
How is Jesus different than the angels?
Hebrews 1:5–7 NASB95
5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again, “I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”? 6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7 And of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.”
Psalm 2 NASB95
1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” 7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 9 ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ” 10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11 Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. 12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
—-
The Son is more than an angel!
He is King.
He is judge.
He is commander.
He is deserving of worship, glory, and honor.
There is a day when his wrath will come.
Blessed are those who take refuge in Him.
Psalm 45 NASB95
For the choir director; according to the Shoshannim. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. A Song of Love. 1 My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2 You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore God has blessed You forever. 3 Gird Your sword on Your thigh, O Mighty One, In Your splendor and Your majesty! 4 And in Your majesty ride on victoriously, For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; Let Your right hand teach You awesome things. 5 Your arrows are sharp; The peoples fall under You; Your arrows are in the heart of the King’s enemies. 6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows. 8 All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made You glad. 9 Kings’ daughters are among Your noble ladies; At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir. 10 Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear: Forget your people and your father’s house; 11 Then the King will desire your beauty. Because He is your Lord, bow down to Him. 12 The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; The rich among the people will seek your favor. 13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within; Her clothing is interwoven with gold. 14 She will be led to the King in embroidered work; The virgins, her companions who follow her, Will be brought to You. 15 They will be led forth with gladness and rejoicing; They will enter into the King’s palace. 16 In place of your fathers will be your sons; You shall make them princes in all the earth. 17 I will cause Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the peoples will give You thanks forever and ever.
