Romans 1:1-7 - Invited to the Gospel

パウロの基礎：僕と使徒

信仰の従順

恵みと平安

招待は、私たち一人一人の前に置かれています。イエス・キリストは、完全な人であり、完全な神であり、罪から私たちを自由にする力を持つ唯一の方です。イエスは私たちを食卓に招き、お祝いに加わるように招き、毎日、イエスにあって新しいいのちを生きるように招いておられます。問いは残っています。私たちはどのように応答するでしょうか。

Invitations are special. They tell us that someone values us enough to reserve a seat at their celebration. But there's an invitation far greater than any wedding or party—an invitation to the gospel itself, extended to us by God through the Apostle Paul's letter to the Romans.

Paul's Foundation: Servant and Apostle

Paul begins his letter by identifying himself as "a servant of Jesus Christ" (Romans 1:1). This isn't the language of an employee who clocks in and out. A servant dedicates their entire life to serving their master. Paul willingly chose this devotion to Jesus Christ.

He also identifies himself as one "called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God." An apostle is someone sent out on a mission. Paul's mission was clear: to take the good news of Jesus Christ to places where it had never been preached. The center of Paul's ministry was the gospel—the good news that through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be saved from God's wrath and receive eternal life with Him.

A Promise Long Awaited

This gospel wasn't something new. Paul explains in verse 2 that it had been "promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures." Just as Yomitan has anticipated a long-promised library, God's people had been waiting for this good news through centuries of prophetic promises. Now, through Jesus Christ, that promise has arrived.

The Center of the Gospel: Jesus Christ

The gospel concerns God's Son (Romans 1:3-4). Jesus was descended from David according to the flesh—fully man, born into the royal lineage. But He was also "declared to be the Son of God in power...by his resurrection from the dead."

The resurrection demonstrates Jesus' unique power. In John 10:17, Jesus said, "For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again." For someone to claim they can lay down their life and pick it right back up means they possess power over life itself—they are the Creator of that life.

Jesus didn't resurrect Himself to prove His power. He died on the cross to take our sins upon Himself and be judged in our place, defeating the enemy we call sin. He rose from the dead so we could have eternal life with Him, defeating the enemy we call death. For those whose faith is in Jesus, death has been defeated. Death becomes simply a transition to eternal life with Him.

The Obedience of Faith

Through Jesus, Paul says, "we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations" (Romans 1:5). The obedience of faith has two aspects.

First, it means believing in Jesus Christ and putting your trust in Him. Jesus Himself said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent" (John 6:29). There is no greater work in life than placing faith in Jesus Christ.

Second, as someone walks with Jesus, faith produces obedience to God's word. When God calls you to forgive someone who has hurt you deeply, and you respond in trust—that's obedience that comes from faith. When God calls you to share the gospel with a neighbor, and you step out despite your fears—that's obedience rooted in faith.

Called to Belong

Paul addresses his readers as those "called to belong to Jesus Christ" and "called to be saints" (Romans 1:6-7). When someone responds to Jesus' invitation, a transformation happens instantly. Just as a bride takes on a new name at her wedding, those who come to Christ leave behind their old name—sinner—and receive a new name: saint, holy one, set apart for God.

This isn't a status earned through years of effort. It's a gift received the moment someone responds to Jesus' invitation. In that instant, they receive righteousness, a new heart, and a new life.

Grace and Peace

Paul closes his greeting with "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 1:7). Some have said this sentence summarizes all of Romans: God has given His grace, and now we can have peace with Him.

The invitation stands before each of us. Jesus Christ—fully man, fully God, the only one with power to set us free from sin—invites us to His table, to join the celebration, and to live a new life every day in Him. The question remains: How will we respond?
