Devotional Title: Contentment

Philippians 4:10–13 “10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Philippians 4:13 is a Bible verse that is frequently quoted in today’s popular culture. As students of the Bible, we must ask: is the text being used in the context of Paul’s letter to the Philippians? Let’s review the passage and examine the context.

Paul begins his closing remarks thanking the Philippians for their outpouring of concern towards his well-being (verse 10). He mentions that despite being in need, he has learned to be content in any situation (verse 11) because Christ strengthens him (verse 13).

Reading the main idea in verse 11, we can conclude that verse 13 is not a singular imperative. In other words, Paul is not saying that “he can do all things” because Christ will see him through. Instead, Paul reveals that, despite his circumstances, Christ has given him the strength to remain content.

After careful study of the passage, we conclude that using this verse “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” as a motivational mantra is a misuse of the passage. Furthermore, the use of the biblical verse for personal ambition or as a framework of motivation would be taking Paul’s writing outside its original context.

Our strength in Christ is not about aligning our personal ambitions, the likes of greed, or material gains; instead it is about aligning our current circumstances to God’s purpose and sovereignty. For believers, it is knowing how to be content in every situation because Christ gives us strength through them.

After seeing the context of Philippians 4:13: how can believers use the verse accurately? The answer is in Paul’s main idea of the passage, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” As believers in Christ, when faced with life’s difficulties, we can have complete trust that God has given us grace in Jesus Christ, who strengthens us through the circumstances He has allowed in our lives. When we know this truth, we can say like Paul, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”

Filipenses 4:10–13 (NBLA) — 10 Me alegré grandemente en el Señor de que ya al fin han reavivado su cuidado para conmigo. En verdad, antes se preocupaban, pero les faltaba la oportunidad. 11 No que hable porque tenga escasez, pues he aprendido a contentarme cualquiera que sea mi situación. 12 Sé vivir en pobreza, y sé vivir en prosperidad. En todo y por todo he aprendido el secreto tanto de estar saciado como de tener hambre, de tener abundancia como de sufrir necesidad. 13 Todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece.

Filipenses 4:13 es un versículo bíblico que se cita con frecuencia en la cultura popular de hoy. Como estudiantes de la Biblia, debemos preguntarnos: ¿se está utilizando este texto en el contexto de la carta de Pablo a los filipenses? Veamos el pasaje y examinemos su contexto.

Pablo comienza sus palabras finales agradeciendo a los filipenses por su demostración de preocupación por su bienestar (verso 10). Menciona que, a pesar de tener necesidad, ha aprendido a estar contento en cualquier situación (verso 11), porque Cristo lo fortalece (verso 13).

Al leer la idea principal en el verso 11, podemos concluir que el verso 13 no es un imperativo independiente. Nuestra fuerza en Cristo no se trata de alinear nuestras ambiciones personales, como la codicia o las ganancias materiales; sino de alinear nuestras circunstancias actuales con el propósito y la soberanía de Dios. Para los creyentes, se trata de aprender a estar contentos en toda situación, porque Cristo nos da fuerzas a través de ellas.

Después de ver el contexto de Filipenses 4:13, entonces ¿cómo pueden los creyentes usar este versículo correctamente? La respuesta está en la idea principal de Pablo en el pasaje: “He aprendido a contentarme cualquiera que sea mi situación.” Como creyentes en Cristo, cuando enfrentamos las dificultades de la vida, podemos confiar plenamente en que Dios nos ha dado gracia en Jesucristo, quien nos fortalece a través de las circunstancias que Él ha permitido en nuestras vidas.
