What does it mean to be good?
think if good
rewarded
praised
exalted
not what hear today Gospel
when u do good say ‘unprofitable servants, only did what duty’
Throw that word around
‘being good’
only one Good in self
but many good to their limit
think how use ‘good’
example
just fulfills what it is
If we good
then simply being human in all ways
body
social
spiritually
gives God no profit
just didnt harm what made
reward for not destroying what God made no sense
only punishment if fail to
thats all being good is for us
What mean for us
remedy pride
owed NOTHING even if we were perfect good
if perfectly good, only failed injure God’s creation of humanity
CCC 2007 and Gospel, no merit whatsoever owed from God
worse, if anything like me, been less perfectly good
and agaisnt infinite/Goodness itself
how often hear:
‘Im good, I deserve'
something very wrong thought
ever crosses mind ‘I deserve’ like society loves to say
not from God
maybe between humans relatively sometimes, but not between you and reality
we owed nothing
Tho don’t deserve
CCC 2008 God give us merit thru his gift
like allowance or praising a child’s work
tho Gospel notes, truly "worthless slave”, but God chooses adopt us
no call slaves but friends. Jn 15:15.
names us God friend, children God
2 fold peace
no clinging desperately what owed
we let go of oppression of feeling offended by universe
owes nothing
great relief in this sort of poverty
And yet look gift
tho we failed
God adopts you as child
everything gains value as gift rather than salary
Conclusion
To be good, is only to be what we are supposed to be
not taking from creation
remedy for pride
release from having to cling to rights
but better appreciates gift given us amidst the chaos of life
Notes
Me
reverse idea owed to be owe
Doing right not owed more except by God’s grace
generous, heaven/eternal life basically like a boss giving a bonus far far far greater than the natural reward of doing what ought
CCC 2007, no strict right of merit from God
CCC 2008 merit only b/c God freely chooses associate man work with his grace
Quote no longer servants
Commentators
Pitre
pistos’: trust rather than just intellectual assent.
sycamore/mulberry
not sure tree exactly
sycamore deep and wide root system
Jewish texts forbidding planting this tree near anything b/c this
obviously hard to pluck such tree
mustard seed
wide deep root system
Othelo: debt literally (but translated duty)
since just duty to be righteous then no reason for pride
how radically indebted to God
unworhty servant literally worthless slaves
Habakuk:
Wait!
