It sort of feels like we are now getting to the meat of scripture
What Jesus Himself taught
Like everything to this point was sort of the appetizer
But it wasn’t it was the Word of God complete
And all of it is good each and every part
Jesus as the savior of the world came that we may be saved and have life and have it abundantly
Don’t you think what He would have to say is very very important
In fact they have Bibles that do just that
Highlight what He had to say in Red so you know the Son of God, the Savior of the World actually said them
When Jesus started His public ministry
He begins with call people to come to Himself
Before we get to that we must remind ourselves of why Jesus came
John 3:16–17 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
Jesus didn’t come to judge people
Our job as Christ followers is not to judge others but rather to present the message of Christ
And it is through that message of Christ people are saved
Jesus came that people might be saved through them
Salvation is only through Christ and no one else
Salvation does not come through the church membership, bank accounts, education, or what you might know about all sorts of things
You have heard that it is said when you go for a job interview it is all about who you know
So very very true it is all about where you know Christ or not
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
No one can come to the Father except through Christ
You can’t get a doctors note into Heaven
You can’t get enough money, degrees, friends or family into heaven
It is only through Jesus which is the very purpose of the coming of Christ
He came that people might be saved
So when you come to Christ you are to be changed
You cannot remain the same as when you first came to Christ
Because if you could then there would be no need for Christ to have come right you would have been righteous all on your own but you aren’t
The world will tell you it is my truth and I am born this way
How could a loving God expect me to change if He made me this way
God created you and put gave you the freedom to mess it up
Which you and I did
We messed it up really really bad
It is called sin
And sin separates you and I from a loving grace filled mercy filled God
Which again church is why Jesus had to come
Jesus came to bridge that gap
To make it possible for you and I to be in perfect union with the Creator of the Universe
He came that we might be saved
so we cannot continue in the same way as we have always done life
We must forever be changed
When Jesus started His public ministry this is what He said
Matthew 4:17 NASB95
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus’s call to repent means the way you are headed is not good
You must stop the direction you are heading and turn around
You must do this because there will come a time when Jesus comes back and there won’t be an option to come to Jesus after that
So it is imperative that you repent of your sin and trust Jesus now
Because He is going to come back
That is Jesus’s message as He begins his public ministry
We see this play out in the men He called
You see when Christ calls you and you answer you can never be the same again
That is the Gospel
You were dead and through a personal relationship with Christ you are now alive
You cannot remain the same after you answer the call of Christ
You are forever changed
Matthew 4:18–22 NASB95
18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Jesus’s call to the men who would become His own disciples is simple and yet it will cost them
It is not complicated about Following Me
Either you will follow Jesus or your won’t
Sort of like marriage and pregnancy
You can’t sorta be married
You can sorta be pregnant
You can’t sort follow after Jesus
Either you will follow Jesus or you won’t follow Jesus
There is no middle ground
Another angle of the same story
Mark 1:16–20 NASB95
16 As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.
Jesus is walking along and He comes to where the boats are
In John Andrew introduces Peter to Jesus and then at some point Peter is on the boat with Jesus
In all this we see Jesus call them to follow after Him
Church the same call is expended to us today
At this very moment in this very place
Jesus the Son of God we read about is calling you and I to come and follow Him
Some of us have answered that call and let me be clear He continues to call us to walk closer and closer with Him
Some of you this morning have not answer to Come and Follow Him
But that same call we read about is extended to us this very day
How will you respond
Will you say Yes Jesus I will follow you
Anything other than a yes is a no
Understand though if you say Yes Jesus I will follow you
You cannot remain the same as before
When Christ calls a man he bids him come and die.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Lutheran Pastor)
Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that when Christ calls you He calls you to come and die
To die to yourself to your own life and be raised up in the life that Christ has for you
This is exactly what Jesus was asking those disciples to come and follow Me
To die to your self and live in the life that I will give you
See before you jump up and down and get all excited about following Jesus in the moment
You need to understand that to follow after Jesus will cost you
It is expensive as it will cost you your life
But
See how that words stops that how much it will cost you dead in your tracks
But what you get in return is true everlasting full and abundant life
Matthew 16:24–26 NASB95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
See Jesus calls people to come and follow Him
You need to understand what Jesus says about following Him
You must deny yourself
It is no longer about you
You are no longer the most important person
You must take up your cross
Jesus went to the cross which was an instrument of death and punishment
And instrument of suffering
Jesus willingly went to the cross for you and I do live
To bridge the great chasm of divide called sin
That is what Jesus did on the cross for you and I
Because you couldn’t do it yourself
You weren’t good enough to bridge that divide called sin
To Deny yourself means you will follow after Christ’s leading to lay down your life for Jesus
To die to yourself and to live in the life that Christ gives you and I
To submit to what He has for you and I
Which as a side note is far better than whatever you could come up
To think the created of dirt willingly laid His own life down for you to have the opportunity to respond to His own invitation to follow Him
Of course you cannot stay the same you were dead and Jesus comes and makes you alive
Did you see what happened when the men were called
They responded immediately
And because they respond immediately they are forever changed
Because they said yes to following after Jesus they are forever changed
Those men immediately left their nets, left their jobs, left some of their families to go and travel with Jesus to share the good news of Jesus
These uneducated blue color works thought it was worth it to forever be changed
What we read about in the Bible is still available to us today
To know that Jesus is still in the business of
Ephesians 2:4–5 NASB95
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Church God is still alive and active and in the business of taking the dead men and women of this world
And giving them life
If you will only answer the call to follow after Him
Because as we have seen this morning once you begin to follow after God you can never be the same old you ever again
Because Christ took what was once dead and brought it to life
Through a personal relationship with Jesus He gives you a new spirit, a new life
That is what Happened to Peter and Andrew
James and John
Matthew
All of them
And church today is no different
Well sort of
Jesus is not physically walking by the water and you are not physically mending your nets
But Jesus is here and His voice is still far reaching to the remotest part of your heart
The call is the still the same
To come and follow me
To come and follow me and be a light
To come and follow me and be a sign man to point people to me
To come and follow me to be a missionary to the remotest part of the earth
To come and follow me to be a missionary NEXT DOOR
Church as we come to our time of invitation
It is just that an invitation to respond to the call of Jesus
To come and follow Him
Maybe you are here this morning and you are wanting to follow Jesus for the first time there will be people down front who would love to talk with you and pray with you accept the call to follow Jesus
Or maybe you have followed after Jesus and through the years you have taken a detour or lets be honest you have allowed sin to get in the way of you and a thriving relationship with Jesus
Would you respond to the call of Jesus and repent and run back to Jesus
Or maybe you just need to spend sometime in prayer
The altar is open
