I. Intro
A. I want you to take a look at a picture I have. (I used a picture where it appears two squares are different colors but they’re not)
1. Which square is the darkest: Square A or Square B?
2. Here’s another little quiz for you.
3. Is Jesus: A – God or B – Man?
B. That leads us into our next subject for our Series: Rooted.
1. We’ve been taking a look at the basic beliefs of the Christian faith.
2. We’re trying to become rooted in the Bible and what defines Christianity.
3. Today’s topic: Jesus Christ.
C. So, what’s your answer to our quiz question?
1. Was Jesus God or Man?
II. The Answer is – both!
A. Jesus is unlike any person who has ever lived or will ever live.
1. About 2000 years ago, God physically entered our world.
2. He walked and talked and ate and slept.
3. And God came in the person of Jesus Christ.
4. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully Man.
5. He’s not a 50/50 mix.
6. He’s not God sometimes and man sometimes.
7. He was, and is, 100% God and 100% man, all the time!
III. Jesus was fully Man.
A. He was totally and completely a Man.
1. There was a miracle that took place before Jesus was born.
2. Read Matthew 1:18.
3. There’s some unexplainable, miraculous stuff going on here.
4. But there’s no doubt Jesus was born from a human woman.
5. He was born just like me and just like you.
6. His ordinary birth affirms He’s human.
B. Jesus had a human body, just like us.
1. Read Luke 2:40. – When Jesus was a child, He grew just like any other child.
2. Read Luke 2:52. – As He got older He grew in stature, in height.
3. Read John 4:6. – Jesus got tired, just like us.
4. Read Matthew 4:2. – Jesus got hungry, just like us.
5. Read John 19:28. – Jesus got thirsty, just like us.
6. Read Luke 24:39.
a. When Jesus rose from the dead, He had a physical body.
b. His body no longer got tired, or never died again, but it was a physical body.
c. He was able to do things and appear places whenever He wanted.
d. But He still had a body that was touchable and recognizable.
C. Jesus had a mind like ours.
1. Read Luke 2:52 – Jesus had to learn to walk, talk, read, write, and eat, just like us.
D. Jesus felt emotions like us.
1. Read Matthew 8:10 – Jesus could be amazed.
2. Read John 11:35 – Jesus could be sad and He cried.
3. Read John 12:27 and read Matthew 26:38– Jesus hurt and grieved.
E. There is one big difference between the Human Jesus and the Human You – He never sinned.
1. Read 2 Corinthians 5:21.
2. Read 1 Peter 2:22.
3. Read Hebrews 4:15.
F. Why is it important that Jesus be fully human?
1. Read Romans 5:19 – He had to be fully human to serve as our perfect obedient representative.
2. Read Hebrews 2:17 – He had to be fully human to die in our place.
3. Read 1 Timothy 2:5 – He had to be fully human to be our Mediator.
4. Read Hebrews 2:18 – He had to be fully human to understand our lives.
5. So Jesus Christ is fully and completely human!
IV. Jesus is also fully God.
A. Jesus is totally and completely God.
1. Read Matthew 1:18.
2. Jesus was conceived miraculously by the Holy Spirit.
3. He was fully human because of His human birth.
4. But He was fully God because of His miraculous conception.
5. Humanity and deity were united in a way that has never happened before and will never happen again.
B. The Bible says Jesus is God.
1. Read Colossians 2:9 – Jesus was fully God in a human body.
2. Read John 8:57-59 and Exodus 3:14– No doubt who Jesus claimed to be.
3. Read Philippians 2:9-11 – There’s no doubt who every knee will bow to or confess as Lord.
4. Read Hebrews 1:6 – The angels worship Him – God said don’t worship any but Him.
C. Why is it important that Jesus be fully God?
1. Only God is sinless.
2. The sacrifice for sin must be pure and without sin.
3. He could not have borne the full penalty of sin for the whole world if He were not sinless.
4. If He didn’t bear the full penalty of sin for the world, there would be no payment for anyone’s sins.
5. Then nobody could be saved.
V. The most important and amazing miracle in the Bible – Jesus.
A. God becomes man.
1. God knows the need of sinful man – forgiveness.
2. God knows the requirements of a Holy God – perfect sacrifice.
3. God meets the needs and requirements with Himself.
4. Jesus meets the need of men and the requirements of God.
5. He gives His life to fulfill your needs.
6. He gives His life to meet God’s requirement.
B. This is what you mean to Jesus!
1. This has all taken place for you!
2. There is nothing that’s been spared to save you.
3. To save you from your sins.
4. To save you from a wasted life.
5. To save you from hell.
C. Now, what does it mean to you?
