Let the Fire on the Altar Never Go Out
Let the Fire on the Altar Never Go Out
Text: Leviticus 6:12–13 (NKJV)
"And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning... A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out."
Introduction
Introduction
Beloved, from the very beginning of creation, fire has been a sign of God’s presence. When Moses approached the burning bush, it was ablaze yet not consumed—a holy fire declaring, “Take off your sandals, for the place you stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). When Israel wandered in the wilderness, God’s presence was revealed in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21), guiding them, protecting them, reminding them they were never alone. When Elijah stood on Mount Carmel, it was the fire of God that fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice, proving to all of Israel that “The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:39).
Fire has always represented God’s purity, His passion, and His power. But more than that, fire is the language of His love. A cold heart cannot love. A dim flame cannot warm. But when the fire of God burns within us, our hearts become alive with His presence, our words are seasoned with His truth, and our lives shine as a light in a darkened world.
This is why God commanded in Leviticus 6:12–13 that “the fire on the altar shall never go out.” The altar represents your heart, and the fire represents the Spirit of God dwelling within you. God is saying, “I lit that flame when I saved you, when I filled you, when I called you. Now keep it burning!”
Think of a young couple in love. At first, passion is blazing, every word is tender, every action full of energy. But if left unattended, passion fades, hearts grow cold, and distance sets in. Likewise, the fire of God in our lives is not meant to flicker out—it must be fed, guarded, and cherished.
In today’s world, where distractions are many and faith is often under attack, this word comes to us as a call from heaven: Don’t let the fire go out. Keep your passion for prayer alive. Keep your hunger for His Word fresh. Keep your heart in worship ablaze. For the enemy would love nothing more than to see the flames of God’s people dwindle into smoke. But we are called to be burning ones, like Jeremiah who said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones” (Jeremiah 20:9).
So today, as we journey through the Word, let us ask ourselves:
Is my altar burning?
Is my heart alive with holy passion?
Or have the ashes of distraction, sin, or neglect smothered my flame?
Beloved, this is not a message of condemnation but of invitation. God is saying, “Come back to the fire. Let Me breathe on your flame again. Let Me fill your altar with fresh fire.” Because when the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in your life, no darkness can stand against you, no chain can hold you, and no power of hell can quench what God has ignited.
Today, I invite you to lean into this Word with open hearts. Let us together fan into flame the gift of God within us, until the fire on our altars burns brighter than ever before. 🔥
Point 1 – God Himself Ignites the Fire
Point 1 – God Himself Ignites the Fire
Scripture: Leviticus 9:24 “and fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”
Detail: The fire on the altar was never man-made—it was heaven’s gift. Pentecost proved the same: tongues of fire (G4442 pyr) came from God, filling believers.
Illustration: Just like you cannot start your car without the spark of ignition, you cannot start a spiritual life without the spark of the Spirit.
Spirit-Filled Thought: If God starts the fire, man cannot quench it. What He begins, He empowers. 🔥
Acts 2:3–4 “Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
John 3:6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
The fire on the altar came from heaven—it wasn’t humanly produced. The Holy Spirit lit the church’s fire at Pentecost, and He is the same today.
Illustration: A revival meeting often begins when God suddenly “strikes the match” of His Spirit. But just as in Acts 2, those who gathered in prayer and expectation were positioned to receive.
Spirit-filled Thought: If God lights the fire, He will also give you the fuel to sustain it. Don’t chase strange fire (Leviticus 10:1).

Point 2 – The Priest’s Responsibility to Maintain the Fire
Point 2 – The Priest’s Responsibility to Maintain the Fire
Scripture: Leviticus 6:12 “And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.”
Detail: The priest had to add wood every morning. Today, we are that royal priesthood, called to daily fuel the fire with prayer, Word, and worship.
Illustration: A fireplace left unattended goes cold, no matter how bright it once burned.
Spirit-Filled Thought: Yesterday’s devotion will not keep today’s flame alive. Daily fuel is required. 🔥
Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
The priest had to add wood daily. Our lives are living sacrifices. We must daily feed the fire with prayer, worship, and the Word.
Illustration: A car will not keep running if you never refill the tank. Many Christians coast on yesterday’s encounter instead of fueling today’s flame.
Spirit-filled Thought: Yesterday’s fire is not enough for today’s battles.
Point 3 – The Fire Purifies
Point 3 – The Fire Purifies
Scripture: Malachi 3:2–3 ““But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire And like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, And purge them as gold and silver, That they may offer to the Lord An offering in righteousness.”
Detail: The refiner’s fire removes dross so the gold can shine. Trials and correction burn away sin, pride, and compromise.
Illustration: A jeweler never leaves gold in the furnace too long—just enough to purify it. God’s fire is precise.
Spirit-Filled Thought: Don’t fear the fire—it’s not to destroy you, but to deliver you. 🔥
Isaiah 6:6–7 “Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.””
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Fire consumes impurities. God’s fire burns away sin, pride, and compromise, making us vessels of holiness.
Illustration: Gold is refined by fire—the more intense the heat, the purer the result. God allows fiery trials not to destroy us, but to refine us.
Spirit-filled Thought: Don’t despise the refining fire. It’s not punishment—it’s preparation.
Point 4 – The Fire Empowers for Service
Point 4 – The Fire Empowers for Service
Scripture: Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
Detail: Jeremiah said God’s Word was like fire in his bones. The Spirit’s fire fuels boldness and endurance.
Illustration: A blacksmith must heat iron before shaping it. Cold iron resists, but fire makes it moldable. Likewise, God shapes us in the fire for His service.
Spirit-Filled Thought: A heart on fire becomes a voice unstoppable. 🔥
Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Jeremiah 20:9 “Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.”
Fire is not just for purity, but for power. The Spirit’s fire gives us boldness to witness, strength to serve, and courage to endure.
Illustration: D.L. Moody said, “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him.” When fire consumes you, you become unstoppable.
Spirit-filled Thought: A cold heart cannot ignite revival; only a burning heart can.
Point 5 – The Fire Must Burn Continuously
Point 5 – The Fire Must Burn Continuously
Scripture: Leviticus 6:13 “A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.”
Detail: The altar fire was perpetual. Our devotion, prayer, and worship must be consistent, not seasonal.
Illustration: Think of a lighthouse keeper—if the flame dies, ships crash. Your fire may be the light that keeps someone from destruction.
Spirit-Filled Thought: Revival dies where neglect reigns, but it thrives where watchmen keep the flame alive. 🔥
1 Thessalonians 5:16–19 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.”
2 Timothy 1:6 “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
The altar fire was perpetual—it could never be allowed to die. Our spiritual disciplines must be consistent. Prayerlessness quenches the flame.
Illustration: Think of a lighthouse. If the keeper lets the flame die, ships crash on the rocks. So it is with the church—our fire must guide the lost home.
Spirit-filled Thought: Spiritual neglect leads to spiritual darkness.
Point 6 – Strange Fire Is a Dangerous Substitute
Point 6 – Strange Fire Is a Dangerous Substitute
Scripture: Leviticus 10:1–2 “Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.”
Detail: Strange fire represents man’s attempt to substitute God’s presence with hype, flesh, or false teaching. It looks real but carries death.
Illustration: A counterfeit $100 bill looks good, but it buys nothing. So does strange fire—it excites but never transforms.
Spirit-Filled Thought: Only heaven’s fire transforms; man’s fire deceives. 🔥
Galatians 1:6–9 “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.”
2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;”
Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire, and it cost them their lives. Beware of counterfeit passion, false doctrines, or emotional hype without the Spirit’s power.
Illustration: A counterfeit $100 bill looks good but has no value. Likewise, strange fire excites the flesh but has no eternal power.
Spirit-filled Thought: Only fire from God transforms; human fire deceives.
Point 7 – Revival Fire Spreads to Others
Point 7 – Revival Fire Spreads to Others
Scripture: Matthew 5:14–16 ““You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Detail: Fire is contagious. When God’s flame burns in you, others will feel the warmth and catch the blaze.
Illustration: A single candle can light a thousand others without losing its own flame. Revival starts with one heart burning.
Spirit-Filled Thought: You are not just called to carry the fire—you’re called to spread it. 🔥
Luke 24:32 “And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?””
Acts 4:31 “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”
True fire is contagious. When your heart burns for God, others around you will catch the flame.
Illustration: One torch can light a thousand others without losing its own fire. Revival is never meant to be contained—it must spread.
Spirit-filled Thought: If you carry the fire, you will set your family, your city, and even nations ablaze.
Spirit-Filled Conclusion
Spirit-Filled Conclusion
Beloved, the call of God today is crystal clear: “Keep the fire burning.” The fire on the altar of your heart is not just for you—it is for your family, your church, your city, and even for generations yet unborn. When you allow the flame of the Holy Spirit to burn strong, you become a beacon in the night, a lighthouse in the storm, and a torchbearer of revival in a darkened world.
We live in a culture that constantly tries to quench our flame with distractions, compromise, and fear. But Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:6 to “stir up the gift of God which is in you.” Don’t let the ashes of yesterday’s pain or yesterday’s victories smother today’s fire. Fan it into flame!
The world doesn’t need more cold religion—it needs burning hearts, men and women whose lives shine so brightly that others can say, “Did not our hearts burn within us as He spoke?” (Luke 24:32). The fire of God is not optional—it is essential. Without it, the altar is just stone. With it, the altar becomes a place of transformation, healing, and revival.
So I ask you today: Will you guard the flame? Will you tend your altar daily? Will you be the one who refuses to let the fire go out? God has already ignited it—now it is your time to sustain it, to spread it, and to shine it.
Closing Prayer
Closing Prayer
🔥 Prayer:
“Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, we thank You for the holy fire You placed within us the moment we believed. Lord, we confess that sometimes we’ve let the embers grow dim, but today we ask You to breathe upon us afresh. Rekindle the flame in our hearts until it burns with purity, with passion, and with power.
Holy Spirit, let every distraction be consumed, let every sin be burned away, and let every cold place in us be set ablaze for Your glory. Make us living altars, burning day and night, never letting the fire go out.
Lord, send revival fire into our homes, into our churches, into our cities, and let it spread like wildfire until nations are ignited with the love of Christ. We declare today: the fire on the altar will never go out, for we will tend it faithfully until Jesus returns in glory.
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray—Amen and Amen!” 🔥🔥🔥
Altar Call – Rekindle the Fire
Altar Call – Rekindle the Fire
Beloved, I feel the Spirit of the Lord calling us deeper right now. Some of you have allowed the fire to grow dim. Maybe distractions, wounds, or weariness have piled up on your altar like ashes. Maybe you remember when your heart once burned brightly, but now the flame flickers low.
But hear the Word of the Lord today: “The fire on the altar shall never go out!” (Leviticus 6:13). God has not given up on you. He has not withdrawn His flame. He is here to breathe on the embers of your soul until they blaze again.
If your passion has grown cold, if your prayer life has been silent, if your hunger for the Word has weakened—this is not the end. Today is your rekindling. Today is your fresh ignition. The same God who sent fire down on Mount Carmel, the same Spirit who set tongues of fire on the early church, is here now to set your altar ablaze again.
I invite you—don’t stay in your seat. Don’t hold back. Come to the altar and surrender. Bring your ashes. Bring your brokenness. Bring your weary heart. Lay it before the Lord, and watch Him turn ashes into beauty and coldness into fire.
🔥 This is your moment to say:
“Lord, let the fire in me never go out. Rekindle me. Reignite me. Consume me with Your holy flame.”
Come, beloved. Step out in faith. Today is your fresh encounter. Today is your altar of fire.
