Introduction
Today we are launching a new series that I believe has the potential to change your life… literally.
We are calling this series TRY
3 Letters. One Word. Endless Possibilities
Try = make an attempt or effort to do something
If you never try, you'll never know what you are capable of - John Barrow
Try and fail, but never fail to try - John Quincy
Our greatest weakness lies within giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. - Thomas Edison
So here’s the question…Is there anything in your life that you’ve always wanted to try
Our hope is that you will take the challenge
Join the movement
And watch Jesus move in and around your life
It’s already happened in my life
For me: (I made a list)
Roller Skating Backwards
Playing Tennis
Riding a unicycle
Jumping off a high dive
Full sleeve tattoo
Hand Stand
I chose what I thought would be the easiest
A hand stand
I had no clue that it would not be easy
Tanner began to teach me the importance of upper body and core strength
Which I found out, I didn't have either.
This led me on a journey of getting stronger (and losing some weight)
But, in trying it also created space for so much more
I started walking... and my kids joined me
They would ride a bike, or walk with me and we would get to talk
about school, friends, life, Jesus etc.
My kids have filmed me learning my hand stand
They've even held my legs as I learned to balance
All of this just because I tried
Tension
But there will be opposition
As I began to share more, something in your mind will begin to argue, justify, or even silence your heart.
All that I ask of you is to try
As you try… I think these efforts become deeply spiritual
Its impossible to try something and not include others
Each week I want our church to try something together
as we go through this series, Im going to teach us things we should be trying as Christ followers
We value practice not perfection
Truth
John 1:35–51 “The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”). Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”). The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown. Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied. As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
As a follower of Jesus, It is our “ought to” to bring others to Jesus
We are supposed to invite them to come and see
As we invite others in, it forces us to rearrange our priorities
It creates space in our life
Application
