Introduction:
The first two chapters there was no sin
When we look at the problems of today and we think, how did we get here?
The fall of man was the beginning of sin
Both naked represents the fact they were oblivious to evil, not knowing where the traps lay, where as Satan did and would use his craftiness to take advantage
From Genesis 3 to Revelation 21, the Bible records the conflict between God and Satan, sin and righteousness and pleads with sinners to repent and to trust God
Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—”
The Temptation and fall (V1-7)
The Temptation and fall (V1-7)
(V1) The serpent was more cunning than any other beast
(V1) The serpent was more cunning than any other beast
a) The serpent: Throughout the Bible Satan is called many names, the serpent, dragon, roaring lion who devours, the father of lies, the evil one, the destroyer, the prince of the world, the god of this age, the ruler of this world system
Revelation 12:9 “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
People laugh at the idea there is an actual Devil, or refer to hell as a place where the cool people go after death, or they call Genesis 3 a fairy tale
We have an enemy that is not a push over, which is why we must understand his strategy
b) More cunning than any other beast which God has made
He is clever, crafty, and shrewd
He is able to disguise himself as something non-threatening
2 Thessalonians 2:9 “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,”
We have formidable enemy
1.1 Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
1.1 Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
Genesis 2:15–17 “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.””
a) The command was to freely eat of every tree but the tree of knowledge of good and evil
Satan adds to the word of God and he questions it
He questioned God’s truthfulness of God’s word and the goodness of His heart
Satan’s target was Eve’s mind and his weapon was deception.
2 Corinthians 11:3 “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
Application: Satan uses the same tactics on us today
In times of suffering we can question or doubt the word of God
We can wonder, God where are you in the midst of our trials
1.2 (V2-3) Eve is deceived and falls into the trap
1.2 (V2-3) Eve is deceived and falls into the trap
a) She adds to the word of God
God said don’t eat or touch
The enemy causes confusion
1.3 (V4-5) Satan Deceives Eve
1.3 (V4-5) Satan Deceives Eve
You will not surely die
God knows that you will be like God, knowing good and evil
a) Satan Implies that God is keeping something good from her
John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
Jesus speaking to the Pharisees describing their father Satan
b) Application:
When the word of God was questioned, Eve should have left, not entertained the thought
Jesus Matthew 4
Tempted at his weakest moment
Satan would twist the words of God and Jesus would quote the word back
James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
James 1:14 “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.”
Drawn away carries with the idea of the baiting of a trap and enticed, in the original Greek means to bait a hook
The hook is concealed with bait making it look appealing
Illustration: The bait conceals the hook, the fish comes along and see this delicious piece of bait. The fish bites on the bait and now they are hooked and drawn away
We get ourselves into trouble when we entertain sinful thoughts
(V8) They sin and run away fromGod and hide
(V8) They sin and run away fromGod and hide
After sinning, we must run to God not away from him
(V12) Adam does not take accountability for his actions
(V12) Adam does not take accountability for his actions
