13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus listeners could relate and understand the reference of the salt.
They used salt for:
flavoring
preserving
healing
They also knew that pure salt never loses it’s saltiness, as compared to salt from the dead sea of other mineral salts that where only good for herbicides to maintain a path.
Flavoring: As Christians we are to bring a Godly flavor to a dull and dark world.
putting salt in bitter coffee
this does not mean that every one will like us. But we should be know as being ones that enhance a situation not make it worse.
That means we work harder as if working for the Lord
It means that we are know for always being the honest ones, even when it does not benefit us.
It means that we bring peace to chaos just by being present.
Preserving: As Christians we are to preserve the world around us.
We do this by speaking up about what is right, not based on our thoughts but on God’s (His Word)
We do this by leading our families in the ways of the Lord.
We do this by holding each other accountable.
Healing: As Christians we bring healing.
We do this by striving to be like Christ.
What was Jesus called to do?
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
We do this by being available to serve others. We cannot do this if we do not make room in life to available for the Lord to use.
Salt does not heal actively, it heals a wound by it’s very presence in the wound. But that also means that there may be some temporary discomfort.
When one has surgery it is not comfortable, but it heals.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
Darkness is always displaced by the light.
100% of darkness is defeated with even the smallest flicker of light. It immediately is not longer pure darkness just different intensities of light.
We are called to be a light in this world, to displace the darkness.
Others cannot help but see a city on a hill for miles. Some cites are even visible from outer space.
15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Do not be ashamed to shine
Fire Bible (Chapter 5)
In Jesus’ time, people used small clay lamps that burned olive oil drawn up by a wick. As Christians, we should be like these simple lamps, providing light in the spiritually dark conditions of this present world
16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Fire Bible (Chapter 5)
We should actively look for ways to assist others and meet their needs at home, at school, on the job and in every aspect of life. By serving people, we reflect Christ’s humility (Mt 20:26–28; Php 2:7) and show his compassion. We break down barriers of resistance and opposition to the truth of God’s Word and the reality of Jesus’ life-changing power.
