Why are we doing this series?

Coming off Genesis series - we were hardwired with desires that link us to God and others.
Theologically and move to more practically how do we be the people of God
This is different than salvation - Jesus is the only way to God
Jesus - Life and life abundantly
2) the problem is not the problem
Setup and summarize
In Chapter 9,
Jesus encounters a man who was blind from birth.
His disciples question whether the man's blindness was due to sin, but Jesus clarifies that it was to demonstrate God's power.
He heals the man by making mud with his saliva and instructing him to wash in the pool of Siloam, resulting in the man gaining his sight.
His neighbors are skeptical, debating whether he is the same beggar. When questioned, the man explains that Jesus healed him
the Pharisees, upset that this occurred on the Sabbath, express divided opinions about Jesus' nature.
They interrogate the man and his parents, who confirm his blindness but are hesitant to speak about Jesus due to fear of expulsion from the synagogue.
The healed man boldly asserts that Jesus must be from God, leading to his rejection by the Pharisees. Later, Jesus finds the man and reveals his identity as the Son of Man.
The man believes and worships Jesus, while Jesus comments on spiritual blindness, indicating that those who claim to see are actually blind.
Chapter 10
Jesus is the gate and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He call his own ship by name and lead them out.
John 10:7–11 “7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.”

The problem is not the problem

The blind man and pharisees have desires. But how they go about getting them met is the difference.
Jesus met the needs of the blind.
A blind mind can see
Affirmed
Blessing
Safety
Chosen
Jesus wants to do that for us.
Jesus lays down his life to meet your desires.

The problem as Augustine said

“Our hears are restless until they find rest i in thee.”

Why do we have these desires?

God hardwired us to seek him and so that we will be able to relate intimately with others.
You were born to hear
You are beloved
You are lovable
You are adequate
You are uniquely gifted
You are worthy
You have purpose
Children develop beliefs about who they are based on their experiences
Your decisions as an adult are informed by the beliefs of who you are.
Samantha and I were going to be the perfect parents!
Sin and consequence of sin create a broken world.

Practical Guidelines

Rules for walking and applying the 7 desires

There are no perfect families. All families have dysfunction
Don’t compare your pain and wounds to others. - it’s not fair
Work on your heart first - Try to set aside any mistakes you might have made as parents. - Like oxygen mask on an air plane.
You will replicate problems
Adults kids? Well I messed up - say sorry and get your heart right with Jesus
Adam and Eve had God as parent and they messed up.

There are 2 main types of wounds

Something that should not have happened
boundaries were crossed
violence or insults
Something that should have happened
basic needs provided
feeling of love and acceptance
This are most often identified in adulthood

Surrender your Unmet needs to God

Forgiving those who hurt you or let you down
Find meaning in your pain
Pain isn’t something to be avoided or numbed - its a signal
Feeling excluded might reveal a deep longing to belong
Felling unsafe might highlight a desire for emotional or physical security
How to find meaning in pain?
1. Identify the Unmet Desire
Ask: Which of the seven desires is being denied or wounded in this experience?
Example: If you feel rejected, the unmet desire might be “to be chosen.”
2. Pray the feelings - invite the good sheared to show why you feel that way
Trace the pain back to earlier experiences. Often, current pain echoes unresolved wounds from childhood or past relationships.
What events triggered the feeling or situation?
Gift
3. See the pattern of relating
Recognize the patterns you’ve developed to cope with unmet desires—like withdrawal, people-pleasing, or anger.
These scripts often protect you but also keep you stuck.
4. Invite Healing
Through prayer, therapy, or trusted relationships, begin to reframe the pain.
Healing comes when you allow yourself to receive what was missing—whether through God’s love, safe community, or personal growth.
5. Serve Others from Your Story
Once you’ve found meaning in your pain, it becomes a source of empathy and connection.
This is how Jesus does it
You can help others feel heard, affirmed, or included—because you know what it’s like to lack those things.

Conclusion

The spirit of Jesus has lead you to this message today. Don’t be afraid.
The Joy of moving on in Jesus name!
When the needs are met by Jesus
Jesus will lead you to what you can handle. And it will often feel too much.
