Proverbs 4 ESV
Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; (doctrine) do not forsake my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.” 10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. 11 I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. 12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble. 13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. 14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. 15 Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. 16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble. 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. 19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble. 20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. 25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. 27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
Generational wisdom
Teaching Your Kids the Right Way
Proverbs 4 is all about making sure you get and keep God's wisdom, and it stresses how absolutely essential it is for parents to pass that wisdom to their kids. Solomon shows us a simple choice: there are two paths in life, and we have to choose the right one for ourselves and our children.
• Our Focus Today: We will look at this chapter to stress the crucial job Christian parents have: to teach their children solid, God-given truth and to actively keep them from buying into the world’s wrong, confusing ideas.
Doctrine vs Precepts
Doctrine is the truth to be believe- the bible is just is that, a systematic body of teaching about God, humanity, and salvation. It provides the why
Precept-a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought, a mandate or a command- whats in the bible. Precepts tell you what is expected of you in a specific situation.
I. The Family Hand-Me-Down: Listen Up! (Proverbs 4:1-9)
• A. The Urgent Request (vv. 1-2): "Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, and give attention that you may gain understanding. For I give you good doctrine; do not forsake my law."
• "Hear… give attention": A father isn't asking his son to just hear him; he’s asking him to really listen and pay close attention. It’s not just noise in the background. Good parents know they have to work to get their children's focus.
• "Good doctrine… my law": This isn't just a collection of nice thoughts or "pro tips." This is solid teaching—truth that you can build your life on. Solomon is sharing God's wisdom, not his own opinions. It's the dependable truth, not the world’s changing rules. Biblical teaching vs opinions
• B. The Legacy of a Good Dad (vv. 3-4): "When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, he taught me and said to me, 'Let your heart hold fast my words...'"
• Three Generations: Solomon remembers his own father, David, teaching him. It’s a picture of passing down faith and truth from generation to generation. It shows that God’s way is a time-tested way.
• The Father's First Job: David, the great king, made time to teach his son the words that lead to a good life. Fathers, this shows your main job isn't just making money; it’s making sure you teach your children God's solid truth. You cannot let the world teach them this.
• C. Wisdom is the Number One Thing (vv. 5-9): "Get wisdom; get understanding... Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."
• First Priority: This is the most important line in this section: Wisdom is the Number One Thing. It’s not optional. It’s worth more than the biggest house, the fastest car, or the most money. It’s the highest goal in life.
• Wisdom's Promise: Wisdom is pictured as a loving friend who will "keep you," "guard you," and "honor you." If you walk away from God’s truth, you walk away from your own protection. The world promises safety through money or power; the Bible promises safety through God’s wisdom alone.
II. Two Roads: Choosing the Right Way (Proverbs 4:10-19)
• A. The Righteous Path (vv. 10-13): "Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in paths of uprightness."
• Clear and Safe: The way of wisdom is straight and safe. Solomon says you can "run and not stumble." The path God sets for us—the path of truth—is the clear road in life.
• Parental Guidance: A parent’s teaching is like the guardrail on a high, dangerous road. It's there to keep a child from falling off the path into danger. Teaching God's truth is the most important thing you do for your child’s future.
• B. The World’s Path (vv. 14-17): "Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on."
• Stay Away! Solomon gives four commands for total separation: "Do not enter," "avoid it," "turn away," "pass on." The world says you need to experience a little bit of everything. God says to stay as far away as possible.
• Backward Morality: The people on the world’s path are driven by sin. They "cannot sleep unless they have done evil" (v. 16). Their way of thinking is completely backward: they think good is bad, and bad is good. Parents, you must be clear in teaching your kids that the popular culture's ideas are backward and dangerous.
• C. The Contrast (vv. 18-19): "But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble."
• Light vs. Dark: The life guided by God's truth gets clearer and brighter as you go. The life of the world is like deep darkness—they stumble and fall, and don't even know what tripped them up.
• The Parent's Job: Your job is to make sure your children see the world’s path for what it is: darkness. You give them the Bible—the light—so they can spot the danger before they step into it.
III. Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:20-27)
• A. The Source of Life (vv. 20-22): "My son, be attentive to my words... for they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh."
• The father reminds his son: my words, God's truth, are not just advice; they are life and health for your whole being.
• B. The Main Command (v. 23): "Keep your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life."
• The Heart is Everything: This is the most famous verse in the chapter. The "heart" is your true self—your will, your thoughts, your feelings. It's the fountain from which all your actions come.
• Parental Application: Parents, your sound teaching is the guard and the filter around your child’s heart. If you let the world’s movies, music, social media, and wrong philosophies flow freely into their heart, you are polluting the source of their life. You must be an intentional guard, checking what goes in. This means being strict about the friends they keep, the things they watch, and the ideas they learn.
• C. Practical Steps for Staying on the Path (vv. 24-27): Solomon gives practical ways to guard the heart:
• Mouth: "Put away from you crooked speech..." (v. 24). Guard their words. Teach them to speak truth and not to be negative or mean-spirited like the world.
• Eyes: "Let your eyes look straight ahead..." (v. 25). Guard their focus. Teach them to keep their eyes on Jesus and deliberately turn away from looking at sinful things.
• Feet: "Ponder the path of your feet... Do not turn to the right or to the left; remove your foot from evil." (vv. 26-27). Guard their steps. Teach them to plan their life and activities carefully so they stay centered on God's way.
Conclusion
• Review: Proverbs 4 is a chain of wisdom that must not be broken. David taught Solomon; Solomon taught his son; we must teach the next generation. We are commanded to pass on solid truth—the lasting, life-giving truth of God—not the confusing, changing fads of the world.
• The Choice: Wisdom promises a crown of honor. The world offers a short thrill followed by stumbling in darkness.
• Final Challenge to Parents: Are you personally, consistently, and urgently teaching your children God's solid truth? Are you guarding the most important thing—their heart—by standing between the source of their life and the world's poison? Don't leave this crucial job to someone else. Take God’s truth, and pass it on clearly and strongly to your children. Guard their path, and guard their heart.
